“We played more consistently and had longer periods of good play over longer periods of time,” said MSU head coach Matt Houk.
UTEP rebounded from a first set loss to post a 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 win over Montana State on Saturday afternoon at the University of South Dakota Classic in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Montana State (1-6) got out to a commanding 21-12 lead in the opening frame following a kill by Madilyn Siebler. MSU held off a late UTEP (7-1) charge winning the set on a block via redshirt freshman Erika Gustafson.
The Miners outhit the Bobcats .359 to .167 to capture the second set. UTEP held the momentum in the third game taking a 17-10 lead. MSU rallied with an 11-5 run as Nellie Stevenson's service ace pulled the Bobcats to within 22-21. UTEP held off MSU's late surge taking the set following a Bobcat service error.
UTEP grabbed a seven-point cushion in the final frame and MSU got no closer than three points down the stretch. The Miners won the match on a service ace.
"We played more consistently and had longer periods of good play over longer periods of time," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We didn't have a lot of peaks and valleys.
"UTEP has top 50 wins and they come at you from everywhere," Houk added. "I thought Jourdain Kamps had a great match, and our young middles did well, too."
Kamps finished with a team-high 11 kills, a .375 attack mark and six blocks. Sophomore Joelie Spelts came off the bench to record six kills and a career-best six blocks. Gustafson posted a career-high eight kills and chipped in three blocks. Defensively, libero Lauren Lindseth registered 17 digs.
UTEP was led by Torrance Lovesee with 20 kills and 11 digs.
