Spelts, a product of Gillette, Wyo., notched a career-high 13 kills to lead the Bobcats.
Iowa State handed Montana State a 25-21, 25-20, 28-26 setback in the final match of the University of South Dakota Classic on Sunday morning in the Sanford Coyote Sports Center.
Iowa State (5-4) got out to a 17-9 lead in the opening set before Montana State (1-7) rallied with a 10-5 run, closing to within 22-19. The Cyclones took the set on a kill by Lily Wachholz. The Bobcat comeback was sparked by Camryn Greenwald, who registered five kills, and Lauren Lindseth, with eight digs.
MSU held a 13-10 advantage midway through the second set and owned a 19-18 lead following an ISU service error, but Iowa State closed out the game on a 7-1 run. Sophomore Joelie Spelts recorded four fills and a .667 attack mark to pace the Bobcats.
The final frame featured fifteen ties and eight lead changes. With the contest even at 19-all, the Bobcats rattled off a 5-2 run taking a 24-21 lead following a block by Spelts and Erika Gustafson. ISU fought off four set points in the waning moments before three consecutive kills by Maya Duckworth completed the Iowa State sweep.
"We played a lot of good volleyball," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We continue to improve, and the players are doing everything we ask of them. Today, we just couldn't find the finish button."

"Joelie had a great match," Houk said. "She has stepped into a role that is not easy. She's played all three positions along the net this season."
Defensively, Lauren Lindseth recorded a team-high 14 digs, while Jordan Radick and Gustafson added five and four blocks, respectively.
Lindseth, who averaged 5.25 digs per set over the three matches, was named to the USD All-Tournament team.
Montana State travels to the Arizona State Sun Devil Classic next Thursday in Tempe.
