BACK TO THE FUTURE: Matt Houk made his first season at Montana State a memorable one as MSU finished 24-9 overall and 12-4 in Big Sky play. Both marks are the best in program history. MSU finished second in the league standings, its highest showing ever. The Cats entered the Big Sky Tournament as the #3 seed and dispatched Montana in straight sets. The Cats downed Eastern Washington 3-1 in semifinal action to set up MSU's first ever appearance in a Big Sky title match. The Bobcats came up short in its search for the program's first ever NCAA bid falling to Weber State in five. MSU played in its first postseason national tournament and advanced to the Fab Four of the NIVC with victories over Pacific, Sacramento State, and Wyoming. MSU lost to eventual champion Wichita State in the semis.
SCOUTING REPORT: South Dakota is 3-2 on the young season after posting a 1-2 mark last weekend at the Northern Kentucky Invitational. No. 4 Louisville handed USD a 3-1 setback on Friday, before dropping a 3-0 decision to NKU. The Coyotes finished the weekend with a 3-1 victory over (RV) Missouri on Sunday. In fact, their relationship goes back even further as Williamson was a U12 player and a rising nine-year-old on Houks' mother's (Colleen) team in Wisconsin. UTEP is 5-1 on the season after going 3-0 at its own Borderland Invitational last weekend in El Paso. The Miners defeated Southeastern Louisiana (3-0), Air Force (3-0) and Stephen F. Austing (3-1). UTEP is led by Ema Uskokovic, a 6-0 senior outside hitter from Belgrade, Serbia, and Kaya Weaver, a 6-2 junior middle blocker from Galt, Calif., who average 3.16 and 2.53 kills per set, respectively. Weaver also averages 2.11 blocks per contest. Last season, the Miners went 25-10 overall and 11-5 in CUSA play. Like MSU, UTEP advanced to the NIVC Fab Four, and lost a 3-0 decision to Wichita State in the championship match. Iowa State is 3-2 overall heading into this weekend's action.
