Pioneer Spirit: Bobcats at DU Classic

After opening the season with a 2-1 record at the Air Force Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic last weekend in Colorado Springs, the Bobcats will again venture to the Centennial State, this time to compete in the University of Denver Pioneer Classic. MSU will open against Utah State on Friday at 3 p.m.
THE PIONEER CLASSIC:
After opening the season with a 2-1 record at the Air Force Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic last weekend in Colorado Springs, the Bobcats will again venture to the Centennial State, this time to compete in the University of Denver Pioneer Classic. MSU will open against Utah State on Friday at 3 p.m.
9-2 Montana State vs. Utah State 3 p.m.
9-3 Montana State at Denver 12 p.m.
9-3 Montana State vs. #20 Loyola Marymount 4:30 p.m.
All matches will have live stats via GameTracker which can be reached through the Denver volleyball schedule page - www.denverpioneers.com. There will be no live video streaming for any Bobcat matches.
MSU's match vs. #20 LMU will begin a stretch where the Bobcats face three top 25 teams in four matches - 9/16 at #1 Nebraska; 9/17 vs #22 Creighton.
THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS:
The Bobcats opened its season going 2-1 at Air Force last weekend. Second-year head coach JJ Riley recorded his second straight season opening win with a 23-25, 34-32, 25-20, 18-25, 15-9 decision over Grand Canyon. Montana State finished tournament action on Saturday dropping a 25-19, 22-25, 22-25, 25-22 15-6 outcome to Air Force, before rebounding with a 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 win over Jacksonville State.
In its match against Grand Canyon, Montana State was paced by four players who reached double-digit kills. Senior Eli Svisco posted a match-high 16 kills, while Natalie Passeck 15, Caitlin Lonergan 14 and Savannah Laws 13 also recorded double-figures. Defensively, freshman Allyssa Rizzo had an impressive debut registering 33 digs, while Passeck added 18 and junior setter Katie Rutecki 13. Junior middle blocker Kiana Black guided the 'Cats at the net with a team-high five blocks. Rutecki and freshman Sydney Mathison dished out 37 and 26 assists, respectively.
After getting up on Air Force 2-1, the Bobcats couldn't hang on as the Falcons cruised to wins and sets 4 and 5, out-hitting MSU .268 to .067. Passeck led the Bobcats with 15 kills and 11 digs, while Mathison also posted a double-double with 14 assists and 13 digs. Rizzo notched 19 saves as libero.
Montana State rebounded in its final match against Jacksonville State jumping out to an early 2-0 advantage, before dropping a close 26-24 decision in set 3. MSU came back strong in the final stanza, out-hitting the Gamecocks .162 to .027 to capture the match. For the third straight match, Passeck recorded double-figure kills with 17 kills. Freshman Caitlin Lonergan, a Bozeman High product, tallied 13 kills, while adding a team-best four aces. Rizzo was the only Bobcat player to reach double-digit digs with 25 saves.
SCOUTING THE PIONEER CLASSIC:
Utah State enters Friday's match 0-3 overall after dropping matches to Oregon State (3-2), Seattle (3-0) and Portland (3-0) in Corvallis. Over the opening weekend, USU hit .230 with a trio of hitters all averaging three or more kills per set, including Kaylie Kamalu-Smith (3.70 kps), Lauren Anderson (3.09 kps) and Kayla DeCoursey (3.00 kps). DU is 2-1 on the season after playing in San Diego, last weekend. The Pioneers dropped its opener to Michigan State (3-0) before bouncing back with wins over Marist (3-0) and San Diego State (3-2). Denver is led by Kayla Principato, who averages 2.36 kills and 1.09 blocks per set. LMU enters this weekend ranked No. 20 in the AVCA Division I Coaches poll. The Lions hosted its tournament last weekend, defeating Illinois State (3-1) and Niagara (3-1), before dropping at 3-1 decision to No. 12 UCLA.
