Utah State used an impressive .308 attack mark, while holding Montana State to just .144, en route to a straight set 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 in the first-round of the University of Denver Pioneer Classic, Friday afternoon.
Utah State used an impressive .308 attack mark, while holding Montana State to just .144, en route to a straight set 25-15, 25-16, 25-19 in the first-round of the University of Denver Pioneer Classic, Friday afternoon.
"We have to take a look at what happened," said MSU head coach JJ Riley. "We looked like a totally different team. It's one of those things where everything seemed off and we were flat.
"We talked about needing to evaluate our individual preparation and see if individually we can come up with some answers," Riley added. "The team needs to learn from this and grow so we don't let it happen again."
Utah State (1-3) jumped out to an early 13-5 advantage in the opening set and never looked back. The second stanza mirrored the first set as the Aggies took a 16-10 lead midway through the game and never let Montana State (2-2) closer than four points.
MSU battled in the final set which featured 11 ties. The Bobcats held a 16-15 advantage following an Alexandra Rader kill. However, the Aggies rattled off a 10-3 run to win the match.
The Bobcats were paced by Natalie Passeck with nine kills and nine digs, while junior setter Katie Rutecki dished out 18 assists, while adding five digs and an ace. Freshman libero Allyssa Rizzo notched a match-high 11 digs.
"We have an opportunity to rebound tomorrow, which is nice instead of having to wait a week," Riley said. "So hopefully, we take advantage of it and move on quickly."
The Bobcats will face Denver at 12 p.m., and #20 Loyola Marymount at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday.
