Northern Colorado Rallies for Five-Set Victory

Despite playing its best volleyball in weeks, Montana State fell to perennial Big Sky power Northern Colorado as the Bears rallied for a 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13 win, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
Despite playing its best volleyball in weeks, Montana State fell to perennial Big Sky power Northern Colorado as the Bears rallied for a 25-19, 25-27, 22-25, 25-23, 15-13 win, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
After dropping the opening set, Montana State (3-19, 1-13) used strong hitting and a solid block to rally from a 23-20 deficit in set two. MSU captured the game on a block by Alexandra Rader and Kiana Black.
MSU held the momentum coming out of intermission storming to an 11-2 advantage. The Bobcats held off a late charging Bears squad as Rader produced the set winning kill.
Northern Colorado (12-15, 8-6) built a 19-14 cushion in the fourth set, before Montana State rallied with a 7-2 run to even the score at 21-all. UNC pushed its lead back to 24-22 following a Bobcat hitting error. A Natalee Godfrey kill pulled MSU to within 24-23, but the Bears forced a fifth set on a kill via Timarie Nymeyer.
Tied a six-all in the final stanza, Northern Colorado scored five unanswered points and never looked back as Nymeyer put an exclamation on a UNC comeback.
"I'm proud of the kids and how they showed-up to battle," Riley said. "They played with emotion, fire, intensity, and desire, and in the end-run it was just a matter of us not taking care of the small details that pushed Northern Colorado over the top. Consistency is the key.
"I think in the fifth set we wanted it so bad that the emotion of the game made us lose our vision," Riley said.
Freshman Natalie Passeck notched a match-high 20 kills, while Rader added a career-high 13 kills and Chase Doughty 12. Senior setter Katie Harrington recorded her second double-double of the season with 49 assists and 15 digs.
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Dana Vestman and Kasey Altman with 18 and 14 digs, respectively. Godfrey, a senior playing her final match in Shroyer Gym, led the Bobcats at the net with six blocks. MSU out-blocked UNC 10-7. It is only the fifth time this season MSU has accomplished the feat.
Northern Colorado was led by Nymeyer and Kortney Lockey with 14 kills, apiece.
MSU will finish its season at Weber State and Montana, next weekend on the road.
