Vandals Block Cat Attack

“We need to get everyone on the same page and that’s something we’re working on,” Riley said. “I thought we did a better job recovering faster after plays that didn’t go our way. We had some nice, long rallies and the kids are competing. That’s a win for us right now.”
Despite a match-high 14 kills from Natalee Godfrey and a career-high 12 kills via Kiana Black, it wasn't enough for Montana State to overcome serve-receive troubles and a big Idaho block as the Vandals swept the Bobcats 25-21, 26-24, 25-22, Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
"The middles had a great match," said first-year MSU head coach JJ Riley. "It was our game plan to attack that side of the floor. I thought Katie Harrington did a nice job getting Natalee and Kiana the ball, and their performance is something to celebrate."
And, while the middles played well, the Bobcat outside hitters struggled with the Idaho (8-12, 5-3) front line as the Vandals finished with a 10-3 advantage in blocking. Montana State (3-13, 1-7) also broke down in serve-receive as Idaho was able to notch six service aces.

Montana State opened the match holding a lead at the midway mark of the first set. Tied at 16-all, Idaho rattled off four straight points and the Vandals maintained the margin for a 1-0 advantage.
The second stanza was much the same. With the game tied at 17-all, Idaho went on a 5-1 run to take a 22-18 lead. The Vandals held set point at 24-21, but the Bobcats answered with back-to-back kills by Godfrey and an Idaho hitting miscue to even the score at 24-all. UI closed out the set on a kill by Kaela Straw, coupled with a Bobcat ball-handling error.
In the final stanza, the Vandals jumped out to a 19-12 margin, before the Bobcats started to chip away at the lead. MSU pulled to within 24-22 on a Godfrey kill, but Sarah Sharp ended the Bobcat come-back with a kill.
Aside from Godfrey and Black's efforts, Montana State also received a strong contribution from Harrington, who finished with a match-high 40 assists. Junior Alexandra Rader finished with eight kills and a .312 attack mark, while Kasey Altman and Natalie Passeck led MSU with 13 and 11 digs, respectively.
Idaho was paced by DeVonne Ryter and Katelyn Peterson with ten kills, apiece.
Montana State will travel to Sacramento State on Thursday.
