First-year Montana State head coach JJ Riley got the start he was looking for as the Bobcats cruised to an opening set victory over undefeated Eastern Washington. MSU battled in sets two and three as well, before eventually falling to the Eagles 16-25, 25-23, 25-23, 25-8, Thursday night in Shroyer Gym.
"We believed in ourselves and we maintained a high-level of play over the first three sets," Riley said. "Things got away from us in the fourth set and that's something we continue to work on. The kids have to understand that it's in their control. Volleyball is a fast sport and you can't dwell on the previous play. We need to work on the mind-set of finishing strong."
Riley rode the arm of freshman Chase Doughty in the opening set. Making her first collegiate start, the Pleasant View, Utah product recorded six kills on six swings as the Bobcats out-hit Eastern Washington (12-6, 7-0) .343 to .125.
"Chase has a strong, quick arm and she helped us get off to a good start," Riley said.
The second set featured ten ties and six lead changes. Montana State (3-12, 1-6) held an 18-17 advantage following a Natalee Godfrey kill, but the Eagles rattled off three straight points and won the set via an Alexis Wesley kill.
The third set was a mirror of the previous game, as Eastern Washington pulled away from an 18-17 deficit with five unanswered points and held off a late Bobcat rally that saw MSU pull to within 24-23.
The final stanza was all EWU as the MSU serve-receive game broke down. The Eagles out-hit the Bobcats .480 to -.161 in the fourth set to remain unbeaten in Big Sky play.
Doughty finished with a career-high 13 kills. She also recorded a double-double with a team-high 11 digs. Also in double digit kills for the Bobcats were Godfrey 11 and Natalie Passeck ten.
Montana State will host Idaho on Saturday night.
