Jourdain Kamps became the 18th member of MSU’s prestigious 1,000-kill club, recording a career-high 26 kills as the Bobcats posted a 31-33, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11 win over Weber State on Saturday night.
Montana State fifth-year standout Jourdain Kamps became the 18th member of MSU's prestigious 1,000-kill club, recording a career-high 26 kills as the Bobcats posted a 31-33, 25-20, 25-23, 20-25, 15-11 win over Weber State on Saturday night.
The win was Montana State's (5-10, 3-1) fourth straight victory in Swenson Gym, with the last three matches all going the distance. The victory also completed MSU's I-15 road trip as the Bobcats knocked off Idaho State on Thursday night. Both Idaho State and Weber State (6-9, 3-1) sat atop the Big Sky Conference standings before facing the Bobcats.
"Congratulations to our kids," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "We have a one match at a time mindset and believe that if we want to have a chance to do what we want at the end of the season, we need to win the tough matches on the road. Weber and Idaho State are very talented, well-coached teams."
Saturday's match featured 53 ties and 18 lead changes as the opening frame set the tone for the back-and-forth donnybrook. The first set was tied 20 times before the Wildcats scored three unanswered points for the win.
Kamps, a product of Ennis, unloaded in the second set with seven kills. She recorded MSU's final four points to even the match at 1-1.
Trailing 10-6 in set three, the Bobcats went on an 11-4 run taking a 17-14 lead on a block by Camryn Greenwald and Joelie Spelts. Weber State rallied with a 5-1 run, and the contest was even five times down the stretch before MSU registered the final two points on back-to-back kills by Greenwald and Madilyn Siebler. Kamps notched eight kills in the set.
The Bobcat block established itself in the fourth frame as both teams struggled to find offensive efficiency. Weber State outhit Montana State .100 to .026, but the Bobcats outblocked the Wildcats 8-4. MSU tied the set at 20-all on a Kamps and Jordan Radick block, but WSU scored five consecutive points to force the fifth and deciding game.
In the final frame, MSU got out to leads of 6-3 and 10-7 only to have Weber State battle back. With the set knotted at 10-all, the Bobcats used kills from Greenwald and Siebler to go up 13-10. A Weber State kill by Saane Munyer sandwiched between two Wildcat hitting errors gave MSU the win.
"It was a great team effort," Houk said. "We had contributions from everyone. Jourdain (Kamps) is swinging with so much confidence, and then we have players like Karli Heidemann who come off the bench in difficult situations and deliver exactly what we need."
Kamps completed an outstanding week recording a career-high ten blocks. MSU outblocked WSU 18-9 as Radick and Spelts added nine and seven blocks, respectively.
Offensively, Greenwald and Siebler also reached double digit kills with 16 and ten. Greenwald's kill total was a career best. MSU's setting duo of Nellie Stevenson and Audrey Hofer dished out 33 and 31 assists, respectively. Lauren Lindseth guided the Bobcats with 19 digs, while Siebler 12 and Hofer 10 also hit double figure saves.
After opening the non-conference 2-9 overall, the Bobcats have rattled of three consecutive victories.
"Our difficult schedule allowed us to be exposed," Houk said. "We were able to learn a lot about ourselves and were able to put things into place and make adjustments for conference play."
