Montana State's track and field program will have athletes competing in two separate meets over the weekend as the Bobcats continue their preparation for the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships that take place in two weeks.
MSU opens competition on Friday with a majority of the squad that traveled participating in Oregon State's High Performance Meet. Several field events are set to begin the day of action from the Whyte Center, the Beavers' outdoor track and field facility, while the Distance Carnival portion of the meet begins that evening.
The Bobcats will close out their appearance at the OSU High Performance Meet on Saturday with events starting at 12 p.m. MDT. A trio of Bobcats – Damien Nelson, Derrick Olsen and Drake Schneider – will make their debut at the Texas Invitational in Austin on Saturday competing against some of the best athletes in the nation. The MSU sprinters will be competing at Texas' Mike A. Myers Stadium with their events taking place in the afternoon.
Montana State's men's and women's squads are both currently ranked among the top three Big Sky schools in the regional and conference Track and Field Index rankings provided by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. The Bobcat men hold a national ranking of 52nd in the USTFCCCA's National Track and Field Index.
MSU's men's and women's teams are currently being bolstered by their steeplechase event group. The Bobcat men's steeplechase combined average time ranks fourth in Division I and is led by Duncan Hamilton, Levi Taylor and Cooper West who all rank within the Big Sky's top 10 performance list. MSU women's steeplechase squad ranks eighth in Division I with top 10 Big Sky times by Trisha Carlson, Lexi Kyro and Gillian Maness.
The Bobcat men's 5,000 group is ranked 19th in the USTFCCCA event squad rankings and is paced by Collin Buck and Ben Perrin, while the javelin tandem of Cantor Coverdell and Cooper Hoffman has MSU 21st in the national rankings in the event. MSU's women's triple jumpers are 15th in the event squad rankings and have Carla Nicosia and Alex Hellenberg listed among the top 10 Big Sky marks.
The 2020-21 track and field regular season is set to conclude on Wednesday, May 5, for the Bobcats as Montana State hosts the Tom Gage Invitational at 2 p.m. MSU and its fellow Big Sky members are slated to begin action at the Big Sky Conference Outdoor Championships in Ogden, Utah, on May 13.
