Bobcat Distance Group Shines on Opening Day of Oregon State Meet

Montana State’s distance event group had several noteworthy performances on Friday, April 30, to highlight the Bobcats’ first day of events at the Oregon State High Performance Meet at Whyte Center
CORVALLIS, Ore. – Montana State's distance event group had several noteworthy performances on Friday, April 30, to highlight the Bobcats' first day of events at the Oregon State High Performance Meet at Whyte Center.
MSU's athletes took advantage of their appearance in the Distance Carnival portion of the meet. It started with the 3,000-meter steeplechase on both the men's and women's sides.
MSU's Lexi Kyro (10:36.16), Gillian Maness (10:36.80) and Trisha Carlson (10:43.72) all completed solid races. Kyro placed ninth with her time moving her from seventh to six on the MSU program's all-time top 10 chart. Maness finished right behind her in 10th overall and registered the seventh fastest time ever by a Bobcat women's runner in the steeplechase. Carlson rounded out the women's showing with her season-best time while crossing the line in 12th.
Duncan Hamilton narrowly missed on his lifetime best in the men's steeplechase. His time of 8:43.38 was just a tenth of a season behind his personal-best mark. Hamilton claimed first place in the event in a photo finish just ahead of Santa Clara's Zach Litoff and Weber State's Tracen Warnick. Also racing in the event were Levi Taylor, who set a new lifetime best in the event of 8:55.66 to finish seventh, and Cooper West who took 14th in a time of 9:20.08.
Collin Buck and Camila Noe had standout efforts for the Bobcats in the 5,000 and 10,000, respectively.
Buck completed a mark of 28:58.39 in the 10k which was just five seconds behind first-place finisher Peter Hogan of Gonzaga. Buck's time was the second fastest ever by a Bobcat in the event. Noe was one of three runners in the women's 5,000 to top the previous facility record. Noe placed third with a time of 15:58.61, topping her own school record that she holds by nearly 10 seconds.
The 'Cats had two strong showings in men's 5,000 races. Ben Perrin placed 14th in the men's invitational flight by crossing the line in 14:07.10. Matthew Richtman took seventh in the open competition with a time of 14:40.94.
Three other Bobcats participated in the meet on Friday. Madi Arneson placed sixth in the women's discus with her throw of 144 feet, 7 inches (44.08m). Alec Nehring took ninth in the men's discus behind his mark of 154-10 (47.19m) and Ethan Saberhagen (138-02) finished in 15th.
Montana State returns to action at the Oregon State meet at 12 p.m. MDT on Saturday. The Bobcats will also have several competitors taking part in the Texas Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
