Bobcats Battle But Fall to the Axe; Rizzo Sets School Record for Digs

“The second set was definitely one of our better efforts of the season,” said MSU head coach Daniel Jones. “I’m proud of the fight our kids displayed, despite having to overcome some things that were out of their hands.”
Montana State put up a good fight against one of the powers of the Big Sky Conference, but in the end Northern Arizona handed the Bobcats a 25-21, 25-23, 25-18 setback on Saturday night in Shroyer Gym.
Montana State (10-15, 5-9) held a 17-15 advantage in the opening frame, before Northern Arizona (19-8, 11-3) rallied with a four straight points. The Lumberjacks maintained its lead despite MSU closing to within 21-20 on a Kelsie White kill. NAU finished out the set on a 4-1 run.
The Bobcats held the momentum in the second set taking a 15-5 advantage following a Northern Arizona attack error. The Lumberjacks rallied to even the stanza at 19-all, before MSU countered with four straight points to grab a 23-19 lead. The run was sparked by back-to-back kills from Evi Wilson. Unfortunately, it would be MSU's last points as NAU went on a 6-0 run to take a 2-0 lead in the match.

The Lumberjacks and Bobcats traded punches in the final set, before NAU pulled away from 14-all with three straight points. MSU would get no closer.
"There's not a lot of quit in our kids," Jones said. "It was a tough night offensively, but we kept them below their season average, and that's what you hope for. We played really well in stretches, but at critical moments we didn't have things fall our way. We need to build on our effort heading into next week on the road."
The silver-lining for MSU rested with junior libero Allyssa Rizzo. The product of Crestwood, Ill., established a Bobcat school-record for single-season digs. Rizzo finished the match with a team-best 14 digs, giving her 523 saves on the season. Rizzo breaks the mark of 514 set by Nicole Baker in 2011.
Offensively, MSU was paced by Wilson with ten kills, while White added nine. Also in double-digits digs for the Cats were Libby Christensen and Hannah Scott with 11 and ten, respectively. White guided MSU at the net with four blocks, while setter Carina Lehto dished out 28 assists, while chipping in eight digs and four kills.
MSU will travel to Eastern Washington next Thursday.
