"We displayed the toughness that we have been looking for," Jones said. "I'm really proud of the whole team tonight."
CHENEY, Wash. -- Montana State volleyball, coming off a three-game slide, earned a much-needed win over Eastern Washington Thursday night at Reese Court. The Bobcats totaled 43 kills and out-hit the Eagles .284-.123 on their way to a three-set victory (25-16, 25-18, 25-23).
"A big team effort tonight, there were contributions from everyone," MSU head coach Daniel Jones said. "To look at the stat-line and see the even distribution that we had was particularly satisfying. Carina Lehto a did a really nice job running our offense tonight and that shows with the considerable contributions from all of our attackers."
The Bobcats (11-15, 6-9) were explosive to begin the match, firing out to a 9-5 lead in the first set. The Eagles (8-19, 0-15) closed in on the lead during the middle of the set, before a Hailey Merkes kill halted the Eagles momentum at 13-11. The Bobcats never relinquished their lead as senior Natalie Passeck served to close the set.
MSU faced its first adversity of the match at the beginning of the second set. EWU jumped out to a 9-4 edge, before MSU had two separate 5-point runs to take a 14-10 lead. MSU took the second set, 25-18, behind an aggressive offense that forced EWU into 18 hitting errors through two sets.
With their backs against the wall, the Eagles had their best set of the match, hitting .347 in the third set. The Bobcats were up 20-19 late in the set, before Eagles' middle blocker Kamille Langford had three consecutive kills, giving the Eagles a 22-20 lead. The run wasn't enough as the Bobcats composed themselves, eventually winning the third set 25-23 to take the match. MSU played almost perfect in the third set with zero hitting errors.
"The most pleasing thing was that when Eastern put us under pressure, particularly at the end of the third, we took control of what we could," Jones said. "We displayed the toughness that we have been looking for. I'm really proud of the whole team tonight."
MSU used a great team effort to earn the win. Five players had at least five kills, led by Merkes with 11. Lehto set up the MSU offense totaling 38 assists. Allyssa Rizzo added 31 digs to her MSU single-season record.
The Eagles were led by Kahle Elliotts's match-high 13 kills.
Montana State finishes up its two-game road trip Saturday at 1 p.m. when the Bobcats visit the University of Idaho in Memorial Gym.
