"If you look at the stat sheet we put up some pretty decent numbers," said MSU head coach JJ Riley. "However, Eastern had twenty more kills and digs and that was the difference. In the first two sets, we had a hard time terminating the ball. In the third set we started to play the type of ball we're capable of, but we weren't able to sustain it the rest of the match."
Montana State (2-9, 0-2) came out of intermission storming to a 10-3 advantage sparked by Bozeman product Caitlin Lonergan. The 6-2 outside hitter posted three kills and two aces during the run as MSU out-hit Eastern Washington (7-4, 2-0) .348 to -.080 to win the set.
In the final stanza, MSU jumped out to an early 5-3 advantage on an Eli Svisco kill, but EWU responded with a 7-1 run and never looked back.
Svisco paced the Bobcats with 10 kills, a .476 attack mark and two blocks, while sophomore outside hitter Natalie Passeck posted nine kills, a .360 hitting percentage and six digs.
The silver-lining for Montana State was upfront as it out-blocked the Eagles 10-2. Junior middle blocker Kiana Black collected a career-high seven blocks, while Lonergan added four. Setters Katie Rutecki and Sydney Mathison dished out 21 and 11 assists, respectively.
Eastern Washington was led by Ka'iulani Ahuna with a match-high 16 kills.
Montana State will travel to Portland State on Thursday, before hosting Montana in the Brawl of the Wild on Saturday in Shroyer Gym.
