Portland State's Pati Anae recorded a match-high 12 kills, including the winning shot in set three as the Vikings swept Montana State 25-15, 25-15, 25-20, Thursday night in the Stott Center.
Montana State (2-10, 0-3) struggled with its serve-receive game as Portland State (10-5, 2-1) cruised to a 2-0 advantage at intermission. In the final set, MSU trailed 16-12 before a 6-1 rally put the Bobcats ahead 18-17 following a Natalie Passeck service ace. The two squads traded points and were even at 20-all. PSU then capitalized on four consecutive Bobcat miscues and Anae's kill to capture the match.
"As a group, we need to play with grit and heart for an entire match," said MSU head coach JJ Riley. "The girls are trying to find it and there is nothing to do but put our heads down and grind. We will keep working hard to find something to get us going."
Passeck and Eli Svisco led MSU with seven kills, apiece. Setters Katie Rutecki and Sydney Mathison dished out 16 and 11 assists, respectively. Passeck guided MSU from the service line with four aces. Defensively, the Bobcats were paced by Allyssa Rizzo with six digs, while Kiana Black and Svisco each tallied three blocks.
Montana State will host Montana on Saturday night in the Brawl of the Wild beginning at 7 p.m. in Shroyer Gym.
