Montana State Downs Jacksonville State in Four to Close Out Air Force Tourney

“We challenged the team to serve tougher after the first match and they definitely responded which is always great to see as a coach,” Riley said. “That tougher serving definitely helped us clean up the block and backrow defense.”
Montana State volleyball coach JJ Riley challenged his team to serve tougher in its final match of the Air Force Amy Svoboda Memorial Classic. The Bobcats served notice collecting a season-high 13 aces en route to a 25-19, 25-17, 24-26, 25-21 win over Jacksonville State, Saturday night.
"We challenged the team to serve tougher after the first match and they definitely responded which is always great to see as a coach," Riley said. "That tougher serving definitely helped us clean up the block and backrow defense."
Montana State (2-1) was solid at the net for the second straight match recording 12 total blocks. Freshman Savannah Laws tallied a team-high six blocks, while Kiana Black added five. In the backrow, freshman libero Allyssa Rizzo registered a match-high 25 digs.
"We thought Allyssa Rizzo had a great tourney from start to finish," Riley said. "Natalie Passeck also played well and was the one constant on the left. Everyone at some point came up with big plays, which is exciting as it takes a great team effort to push us every day in practice."
Passeck, a product of Parker, Colorado, paced the Bobcats with 17 kills, while Caitlin Lonergan added 13. MSU's setting duo of Katie Rutecki and Sydney Mathison each dished out 22 assists. Lonergan and Black also chipped in four aces, apiece.
"We had a lot of performances throughout this tournament and got some things solidified," Riley said. "However, we need to clean up some things, which gets us excited to get back into the practice gym."
As a team, MSU notched 56 kills and posted a .201 attack mark. The Bobcats held the Gamecocks to 45 kills and a .154 attack mark.
"This was a great win for this team as they stayed tough and focused after two long matches and a quick turnaround," Riley said. "It sets a great foundation to build off of and we love their grit."
Montana State will play at the University of Denver Pioneer Classic next weekend.
