Idaho State (8-11, 3-3) out-hit the Bobcats .427 to .199 and had three players in double-figure kills. Montana State (4-11, 2-4) recorded 27 hitting miscues as the Bengals snapped MSU's two-match winning streak.
"We're going to experience some setbacks," said MSU head coach JJ Riley. "We're coming off two great matches. We need to learn that when you play a team like Idaho State that's used to winning, it's going to take a great team effort. You have to stay tough and keep your composure."
MSU held a 9-6 advantage in the opening set before giving up a pair of 5-0 runs to Idaho State. The Bengals took a 1-0 lead following a MSU hitting error. The second stanza featured nine ties before the Bobcats separated themselves from ISU at 19-all with three straight points and won the set on a Caitlin Lonergan kill.
