“I have to say the team did everything they could to give ourselves the chance to get that one,” said MSU Head Coach JJ Riley. “The fight and determination was awesome. It hurts bad to come up short after investing 100-percent of themselves into that match."
The Montana State volleyball team played its best match in over a month and had four players in double-figure kills, but it wasn't enough as Big Sky Conference North Division leaders Eastern Washington edged out the Bobcats 22-25, 26-24, 23-25, 25-15, 15-13, Friday night in Reese Court.
"I have to say the team did everything they could to give ourselves the chance to get that one," said MSU Head Coach JJ Riley. "The fight and determination was awesome. It hurts bad to come up short after investing 100-percent of themselves into that match.
"It's what we have been stressing and they did a great job," riley added. "We are proud of them for that and working hard as a staff to get them a win."
In the pivotal fifth set, Montana State (3-17, 1-11) fought back from a 7-3 deficit to even the game at eight-all. The set was tied four times down the stretch and MSU took the lead twice, the last coming at 12-11. Eastern Washington (14-9, 9-3) rattled off three straight points to take a 14-12 advantage and closed out the win.
Senior middle blocker Natalee Godfrey paced the Bocbats with a team-high 15 kills, while hitting .520 from the field. Also in double-figures were Natalie Passeck 13, Kiana Black 11 and Chase Doughty ten. Senior setter Katie Harrington dished out 53 assists, while adding five digs and four kills.
Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Kasey Altman with a match-high 27 digs.
