THE GONZAGA INVITATIONAL:
Montana State will play its second of four straight tournaments at the Gonzaga Invitational this weekend in Spokane, Washington. MSU will open with Canisius on Friday, Sept. 5 at 5 p.m., (MST). On Saturday, the Bobcats will play Grand Canyon University at 1 p.m., followed by Gonzaga in the night-cap at 7 p.m.
'CAT CHAT:
The Bobcats opened its 2014 season with perhaps its toughest pre-conference tournament since 2005 (#9 Wisconsin, #14 Missouri, Northern Colorado) when it competed in the Utah Classic last weekend in Salt Lake City. MSU opened with Utah, who finished last fall ranked #28 in the final RPI poll. The Utes handed Montana State a 25-21, 25-21, 25-16 setback. The Bobcats were led by Eli Svisco and Zoe Gogan with nine kills, apiece. On Saturday, MSU defeated two-time defending WAC champion New Mexico State (2013 RPI 93) 25-19, 25-20, 18-25, 25-18 for its first win of the season. Gogan and Loni Kreun paced the 'Cats with 12 kills, while Natalee Godfrey chipped in ten kills and four blocks. In the final contest of the tournament, Missouri State, who ranked #70 in the 2013 RPI list, beat Montana State 25-21, 25-21, 25-17. For her efforts, Kreun, a 6-foot sophomore outside hitter, was named to the all-tournament team.
SCOUTING THE GONZAGA INVITATIONAL:
The Bobcats will open against Canisius (0-3) of the Metro Atlantic Conference. It will be the first meeting between the two schools. Last week, the Golden Griffins were led by Rachel Kline, who averaged 3.36 kps. Saturday, MSU will play Grand Canyon (3-0) in the Martin Centre. Last weekend, the Antelopes were guided by Natalie Tardy and Shannon Dugan, who averaged 4.67 and 4.44 kills per set, respectively. The GCU offense is led by former Bobcat setter Leigh Stonerook. MSU's final opponent will be Gonzaga. The Zags (2-1) played at the Boise State Invitational last weekend. GU defeated Boise State (3-1) and Big Sky foe Portland State (3-1), and fell in a hard-fought 3-2 decision to #4 Washington. Under the direction of former MSU head coach Dave Gantt, the Zags were paced last weekend by Savannah Blinn, who averaged 4.46 kills, while hitting .316 from the floor.
