Bobcat Spikers Open Season at Utah Classic

THE SEASON OPENER:
The 2014 edition of Montana State volleyball will open its season at the Utah Classic in Salt Lake City on Friday evening. The Bobcats will open play against Pac-12 foe Utah at 7 p.m. in the Crimson Court. MSU will finish the weekend on Saturday, Aug. 30 when it faces New Mexico State at 12 p.m, followed by Missouri State at 5 p.m.
'CAT CHAT:
Third-year head coach Kyle Weindel returns eight letterwinners, including four starters to this year's squad. Last fall, Weindel's young squad - which featured three freshmen, two sophomores and one senior in the starting rotation - posted an overall mark of 6-25 and a 4-16 ledger in Big Sky Conference play. Sophomore outside hitter Kennadie Clute returns as MSU's top offensive threat, after posting 513 kills and averaging 4.38 kps. Her kills per set mark was the best in the nation at the NCAA Division I level for a freshman. Clute led the Big Sky in both categories, as well as points, en route to being named league rookie of the year. Also returning to the starting line-up will be juniors Natalee Godfrey (MB), Eli Svisco (OH) and Loni Kreun (OH). Senior Kasey Schlatter, who played in all 117 sets last fall as a defensive specialist, will take over libero duties. Sophomore transfer Katie Harrington will get the starting nod at setter.
SCOUTING THE UTAH CLASSIC:
The Bobcats will face two squads that advanced to the NCAA Tournament last fall. Utah finished the Pac-12 season with a 9-11 mark, and were 21-13 overall. This season, the Utes return Shelby Dalton, a 2013 American Volleyball Coaches Association All-America pick. Dalton is one of six seniors for the Utes this season. New Mexico State also made the NCAA Tournament and ended its 2013 campaign with a 22-11 overall mark and a 14-2 ledger in Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies, who are favored to win the league this season, captured its second straight WAC crown last fall. NM State will look to outside hitter Bradley Nash. Last year, she averaged 2.03 kps. Missouri State went 21-11 overall and 12-6 in Missouri Valley Conference play. The Bears return outside hitter Olivia Brand, who notched an impressive 283 kills on the year.
