Ninth-ranked MSU faces a stern road test on Saturday
Montana State's dynamic offense faces its sternest test of 2010, facing in Northern Arizona the league's stingiest scoring defense at Flagstaff's Walkup Skydome on Saturday. NAU's staunch defense allows just 18.4 points per game, and is led by a front seven that surrenders just 80.4 yards a game on the ground. DE Isaac Bond leads NAU with 4.5 sacks, while LB Reid Worthington has 30 tackles on the year. Payton Trophy candidate Michael Herrick triggers the potent Lumberjacks offense.

Mac The Miracle Worker?
MSU played the last three games without at least two projected O-line starters, guards Ben Tauanuu (leg, out for season) and Conrad Burbank (knee, week-to-week). Tackle Leo Davis and center Alex Terrien also missed stretches, but offensive line coach Jason McEndoo has built a successful attack plugging in-state former walk-ons Casey Dennehy (guard) and Shaun Sampson (center) into the voids.
The Old-Timers
MSU has scored 30 offensive touchdowns in 2010, only five by seniors - receiver Julius Lloyd has four, while tight end Kyle Begger has one.
The Rush on Rushing
Montana State's 233.3 rushing yards per game leads the Big Sky, with second place Sacramento State more than 40 yards behind (189.7). Bobcat junior Orenzo Davis stands third in the league in rushing (101.3), with CJ Palmer sixth (67.4).
Skewing Young
The 19 players on MSU's offensive depth chart (some O-linemen hold down multiple spots) broken down by class: seniors-4, juniors-7, sophomores-4, frosh-3.
Offensive Notebook...
Through six games, Montana State has put up some hsitorically significant offensive numbers:
* The team's 646 total yards at Sac State is third-most in school history and the most since a school-record 683 against EWU in 2004
* MSU's 326 rushing yards against Portland State is MSU's most since gaining 369 at Portland State in 2008, and the most in the Big Sky in 2010
* MSU's 64 points against Sac State was fifth-most in school history, the 61 points was the most a Bobcat team has ever allowed in a win, and the 125 combined points was the most in school history
* MSU has allowed just two sacks in the last two games, and is second in the Big Sky in sacks allowed
* Denarius McGhee is the highest-rated fresman in the FCS in passing efficiency and total offense
Taking a Hit
After four games, Montana State's defense had an aura of dominance. With three veteran starters (DE Dustin O'Connell, LB Clay Bignell, SS Jordan Craney) missing most of the last two games, however, the Bobcat defense has given up uncharacteristic yardage totals:
Total Rush Pass

Rushing Rundown
Sac State rushed for 260 yards against MSU. The Bobcats' first four opponents combined for 295 yards on the ground.
Mayhem in the Middle
Montana State's interior defensive linement have created havoc in 2010. The four-man Bobcat rotation through the nose and defensive tackle positions have accounted for 36 tackles, including 5.0 for a loss and 3.5 sacks, with seven pass breakups, three hurries, two fumbles forced, two recovered, and two interceptions. Zach Minter has scored two touchdowns this season, while Ogden's forced fumble was the first of his MSU career.
Minter Magic
Montana State defensive tackle - read that again - Zach Minter intercepted passes in back-to-back games against EWU and Sac State, returning his pick vs. Eastern Washington for a touchdown. Against Drake, Minter recovered a fumble that he forced in the end zone for a touchdown, giving him two scores and three turnovers forced in the last four games.
Talkin' Turnovers
Montana State has been even or positive in turnover margin in each game, and stands +6 in turnovers after six games. The +1.0 per game is tied for best in the Big Sky with this week's opponent, NAU.
The Rush to Judgment
Montana State led the Big Sky in rush defense with 82.8 yards a game allowed in 2009, 60.6 against conference opponents. The Bobcats have allowed 813 net rushing yards in 2010, 508 of them the last two weeks. The Bobcats have dropped from first to fourth in the Big Sky in rushing defense
More Rushing Remarks
Since the beginning of 2008, MSU has allowed its three FBS opponents to rush for 161.7 yards per game, but has held FCS foes to 61.2 yards (1,040 total) in 17 games and its three non-DI foes 34.0 yards per game (102 total).
Scoopin' and Scoring
MSU is 15-0 during Rob Ash's tenure when the defense scores (including special teams safeties), 8-15 when it does not.
