Montana State (2010) Enters the season as a starting safety… elected team captain by his teammates following spring drills. (2009) Earned All-Big Sky Honorable Mention and Academic All-Big Sky honors… emerged as the starting free safety in the preseason due to injuries in the secondary, and moved into the job permanently… tied for the team lead with 71 tackles, including 5.5 for a loss… team-high four interceptions… involved in the most memorable moment of 2009 for the Cats, tipping over Weber’s Trevyn Smith on a third-down play short of the goal line, then forcing the Bo Bolen stop on fourth down to preserve MSU’s upset win over the 11th-ranked Wildcats… season-high 12 tackles in that game, 2.5 for a loss… picked off two passes against Dixie State… caused and recovered a Portland State fumble… named co-winner of MSU’s Don Hass Most Inspirational Player Award for 2009, with Joe Schreibeis. (2008) Registered four tackles, largely in special teams duty… played nine games. (2007) An outstanding special teams performer… registered eight tackles, including three solos… played in all 11 games. (2006) Redshirted.
West A two-year starter who earned all-conference and all-state honors as a senior… registered 154 tackles as a senior at West… the 2006 Shrine Game MVP… competed on state championship football and wrestling squads at West, qualifying for state as a 171-pounder as a junior.
Academics An elementary education major… earned 2007 Academic All-Big Sky honors.
Personal Born Michael D. Rider on March 30 in Fort Collins, Colo… one of three children of Christy and Craig Rider… his father played offensive guard at Texas, clearing holes for Earl Campbell… former prep teammates include MSU’s Joe Schreibeis and UM’s Kevin Klaboe.
