Defensively, junior libero Lauren Lindseth paced MSU with 18 digs. The Great Falls product recorded her 1,000th career dig late in set three, becoming the 11th Bobcat in history to reach the milestone.
Denver's Genevieve Lewis and Cassie Davis' efficient offensive performance proved too much for Montana State as the duo combined for 48 kills with a .275 attack mark to guide the Pioneers to a 21-25, 25-20, 28-26, 22-25, 15-12 win over the Bobcats on Thursday afternoon in the opening match of the University of Nebraska Husker Invite.
In a back-and-forth battle that featured 37 ties and 17 lead changes, Denver (2-2) used a late 7-3 run in the fifth and deciding set, winning the match on Lewis' 25th kill of the contest.
"We couldn't do enough to slow down their outsides," said MSU head coach Matt Houk. "I felt our blocking was subpar and that is something that we will have a conversation about. We put up some okay blocking numbers, but we have the potential to be so much better in that skill set."
Montana State (1-2) opened the match taking the first set as Camryn Greenwald sparked the Cats with four kills as MSU outhit DU .276 to .138.
Denver turned the table in the second frame outhitting the Bobcats .438 to .273. Nebraska native Madilyn Siebler, playing in front of a home crowd, recorded five kills, and hit .625 in the set.
Set three proved pivotal as the two squads played through 16 ties and seven lead changes. The Pioneers held set point at 24-23, but a Joudain Kamps kill followed by a kill via freshman Karli Heidemann gave MSU its first set point at 25-24. DU answered with a block, but another Kamps kill gave the Bobcats its second attempt at 26-25 to close out the frame. The Pioneers took the set with three consecutive points, including a pair of kills by Molly Mirabelli.
MSU evened the match at 2-2 taking set four in the late going breaking away from 20-all by closing the door on DU with back-to-back blocks- setting up the final frame.
Heidemann, who was also back in her home state, led the Bobcats with 16 kills, while Siebler added 15, and Kamps 11. Kamps narrowly missed a triple double adding ten digs and nine blocks.
Defensively, junior libero Lauren Lindseth paced MSU with 18 digs. The Great Falls product recorded her 1,000th career dig late in set three, becoming the 11th Bobcat in history to reach the milestone.
"Lauren is as consistent and as steady as they come," Houk said. "She holds it down for us, and that's a great trait to have in that position."
MSU faces The Citadel on Friday at 9 a.m. (MT) and #2 Nebraska, Saturday, at 1 p.m.
