For Kelly Cross the love of the game runs deep.
Every Friday since the beginning of May, we've spotlighted a member of the Bobcat volleyball program. Now up is freshman Kelly Cross from Truckee, Calif.
For Kelly Cross the love of the game runs deep. The freshman from Truckee, Calif., comes from a volleyball family with her dad still playing the game at a high level. For MSU head coach Daniel Jones, he'll look for that passion and enthusiasm to spill out on the court when competition returns to Shroyer Gym. But for now, Jones is happy to have Cross in the practice gym where she has already made an impact on the team.
CATCHING UP WITH KELLY:
1). Can you give us an update on your current status?
I am currently living in the dorms on campus. I have been going to class, going to practice, working out, spending time with the other freshmen and upperclassmen, learning my way around campus, and learning how to be a collegiate athlete. This year has been crazy, but I think it's worth it to be here with the team doing what I love! I'm hopeful that things will settle down soon in terms of this virus.
2). Can you tell us about yourself, family, hometown and what you like to do outside of volleyball?
My hometown is Truckee, California and it is one of the most beautiful places on earth. It's relatively similar to Bozeman in climate and overall vibe, but it has a small-town feel. I'm the youngest of three children and I am really close with my family. Outside of volleyball I love waterskiing, wake surfing, white water rafting, watching Formula 1 with my oldest brother every Sunday morning, doing math with my other brother, and going out to coffee with my mom.
3). How has the transition into collegiate volleyball been going for you this summer?
The transition into collegiate volleyball has been even better than I expected. My teammates and coaches could not have been more kind and supportive, which immediately put me at ease. I love the hard work of practice and workouts!
4). What are your goals and expectations for the team this year?
I want to be as competitive as possible and do everything I can to help my team win a Big Sky championship!
HEAD COACH DANIEL JONES ON KELLY CROSS:
"I'm really excited to have Kelly in our gym. The thing that has always stood out about Kelly is the passion and enthusiasm that she plays the game with. She comes from a volleyball family, with her father representing USA in age group competitions, so that love for the game runs deep. She has already shown how that passion can impact our practice environment with great communication and a strong desire to compete. Coming out of the same Reno club as Emma Pence she is coming to us well trained, and with an extremely high volleyball IQ. She is a quick learner who I know is going to have a big impact on the program in her time here."
