Montana State had four players in double-digit kills led by senior Evi Wilson who posted 17 winners as the Bobcats defeated Cal State University Bakersfield 25-16, 25-23, 23-25, 25-20, Saturday morning in the Montana Farmers State Bank Invitational in Dahlberg Arena.
Montana State (4-4) finished the invitational with a 2-0 mark and on a three-match win streak.
After trailing 4-2 in the opening set, the Bobcats rattled off a 5-0 run. MSU built the margin to 19-9 on a Hannah Scott kill and closed out the set with a block from Kelsie White and Allie Lynch. Montana State out-hit Cal State Bakersfield .364 to .147 in the first frame.
The second set featured ten ties. MSU got out to an early 10-5 run, but the Roadrunners responded with a 6-0 run of its own to take an 11-10 advantage. Both teams traded points midway through the set before Cal State Bakersfield went on a 4-0 run to take a 22-20 lead. Following a Montana State time out, MSU got back-to-back blocks by Kira Thomsen and Emme Pence. The Bobcats capped a 5-1 run to close out the set on a Scott kill.
"Our middles continued to open up the outside for our pins and Hannah and Evi really did a nice job converting," said MSU head coach Daniel Jones."
CSUB grabbed the momentum in the third set feeding off 12 Bobcat miscues. The Roadrunners built a 12-5 lead. The Bobcats closed the margin to one-point on three occasions but were never able to gain the lead as CSUB captured the set on a kill off the Bobcat block.
"We made too many errors in the third set and we struggled to find a balance," Jones commented. "But give our kids credit for coming back in the fourth set. I really thought Kelsie found her rhythm and we had great play from our backrow players to push us over the top."
In the final stanza Montana State got back on track taking a 15-6 following a White kill. MSU pushed the lead to 22-12 on another White winner. The Roadrunners made one last surge outscoring the Bobcats 8-2 to pull to within 24-20, but the ensuing serve went long to give MSU the victory.
Aside from Wilson, also posting double-figure kills were Scott, Thomsen and Emma Pence with ten kills, apiece. Setter Allie Lynch dished out 45 assists, while adding seven digs and three kills.
White finished with nine kills, a .400 attack mark and four blocks.
Defensively, Allyssa Rizzo led all players with 25 digs. Pence, a freshman from Carson City, Nevada, finished with a match-high six blocks.
For her efforts, Wilson was named to the all-tournament team.
Montana State will open its home season on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when it hosts Seattle U at 6 p.m. in Shroyer Gym.
