The Montana State track and field teams are ready to take on the best of the Big Sky Conference when the Bobcats compete in the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Missoula
The Montana State track and field teams are ready to take on the best of the Big Sky Conference when the Bobcats compete in the Big Sky Outdoor Championships in Missoula. The multi-events take place on Wednesday and Thursday at Montana's Dornblaser Field, while the start of field and running events begin on Friday.
Montana State's Wyatt Thompson-Siporen participates in the men's decathlon to open championship competition. The Bobcats will be represented by 21 on the men's side at the Big Sky outdoor meet. The women's squad will feature 28 athletes in the field.
"It's definitely the culmination of a lot of work that's been put in throughout the fall, winter and spring," said Lyle Weese, Montana State's director of track and field. "We're excited to go compete really well, put our best foot forward and hopefully it'll be like the indoor championships. We went in ranked middle of the pack and worked our way up and had a really good meet. We're hoping for the power of some positive momentum to drive us forward."
The Bobcats had solid appearances at the Big Sky Indoor Championships in Bozeman from Feb. 21-23. MSU's men and women each earned runner-up performances at the meet inside Worthington Arena. The Bobcat men scored 113 points to easily distance themselves from third place finisher Southern Utah (74). The MSU women recorded 79 points, placing ahead of Northern Arizona (75) and Southern Utah (70). The men's showing was their best since 2013 at the indoor Big Sky meet and the women's finish was their best since the 2015 indoor championships.
MSU has put together strong outings heading into the Big Sky meet in Missoula.
Both Bobcat squads completed Cat-Griz Dual victories over Montana in Bozeman on April 27. A variety of MSU athletes earned season-best marks at the Tom Gage Classic on May 3 to put themselves into stronger positions on the Big Sky entries list.
The MSU women's team will have a full roster at its disposal for the Big Sky Championships. Of the 28 entered athletes for the Bobcats, 14 are in line to score points while others are within striking distance. Montana State's men's squad has 11 that are in line to score points based off seeded entries as well.
Several athletes will be competing in more than one event and have the opportunity to play a role in each for MSU's team total.
Thompson-Siporen had two all-conference efforts during the indoor season for MSU and will attempt to repeat the feat outdoors. He has the second-best entry in the men's pole vault to go along with his appearance in the decathlon. The men's team also features Henry Adams and Alex Lewis. Adams has the fourth best marks in the 110 hurdles and the pole vault heading into the meet. Lewis is third on the entry list in the long jump, which he earned the bronze medal in at the Big Sky indoor meet, and seventh in the triple jump.
The women's squad has featured athletes in different disciplines. Kelsi Lasota, who took first in the 5,000 and second in the 10,000 at last season's Big Sky Championships, is among the top seven entries in both events this year. Morgan Evans holds the second-fastest mark in the 100 hurdles and sixth best time in the 100 this outdoor slate. Truanne Roginske is fifth on the Big Sky performance list in the 100, but comes off an indoor season in which she took third in the 60-meter dash. She's also ninth among entered athletes in the long jump and 12th in the triple jump.
For many others on the Bobcats' track and field teams, they will be primarily focused on an individual event they can make their impact on.
"We really base entries on what's best for the athlete and how they can compete at the conference level," Weese said. "Sometimes that's competing in one event or it can be quite a few. It really comes down to what's best for each person."
The Bobcats figure to have a strong representation in multiple events at this year's championships.
Both of MSU's steeplechase groups may provide big points this weekend. The women's team has six of the top nine competitors in the Big Sky in the event, led by Anna French who is the second fastest runner heading into the meet. Duncan Hamilton is the first seeded runner in the men's 3,000 steeplechase and he's joined by three others in the top 12 of the event. MSU's men's squad also has three in the top eight of the pole vault with Luke Middelstadt joining Thompson-Siporen and Adams in the field. The Bobcats have three of the top eight times in the women's 400 with McKenna Ramsay, Elisabeth Krieger and Haile Norred looking to score points for MSU.
Plenty of all-conference performers during the indoor championships may also rise up to snatch a podium spot again during the outdoor meet. Lucy Corbett claimed gold in the women's high jump and is fourth on the outdoor performance list. Drake Schneider won a gold medal a year ago in the men's 400 hurdles and is second heading into the event this season. Jadin Casey took second in the 400 during the indoor championships but has the eighth best time on the outdoor entry list.
"We have quite a few standouts," Weese said. "Lucy should be competitive in the high jump and we look really strong in the men's pole vault. The sprints have been coming on as of late. McKenna, Drake and Jadin all had a great indoor championships.
"It's going to be exciting to see the steeplechases. Those could be strong events for us. With Kelsi in the 10k and the 5k and Camila in the 5K, they could really do some outstanding things there."
The decathlon wraps up on Thursday afternoon and full events begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, May 10, with the men's hammer throw starting the day. The entire championship meet can be streamed on Pluto TV and WatchBigSky.com. A link to live results are available on the Montana State track and field schedule page on msubobcats.com.
