Bobcat Men's Tennis Team Hosts Sacramento State to Launch Crucial Closing Stretch

MSU looks to make up ground against teams ahead of the Cats in the standings
BOZEMAN, Montana – Montana State hits the home stretch of its men's tennis schedule Saturday, when the Bobcats host Sacramento State to begin a string of four matches in eight days against teams ahead of or even with the Bobcats in the Big Sky standings.
Saturday's match against Sacramento State, which enters weekend play in a three-team logjam tied for second place at 4-2 in the conference (6-10 overall), begins at 10 am on the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center. MSU stands 1-3 in the league, 2-9 overall. Saturday's match is MSU's second in the last four weeks due to weather issues, which poses both challenges and benefits for Bobcat coach Jared Burnham.
"We're in pretty good shape physically right now," Burnham said of his team that was plagued with nagging injuries through the early weeks of the season. "We just need to get back into competition. It will be nice to play at home again."
Senior Alex Flink leads the Bobcats from the No. 1 ladder position. He stands 5-4 on the season in singles play, and is 4-5 at No. 1 doubles teaming with Drew Brown. "Alex is having a nice senior season," Burnham said. "He's competing hard and playing well, and does a good job setting the tone for us."
Sacramento State's Johannes Gjerdaker is one of the league's top singles players. A freshman from Norway, Gjerdaker is 6-2 at No. 4 singles and 4-1 at No. 5. The Hornets earned a key 4-3 win at Montana on Friday. Sacramento State won the doubles point and earned singles wins at the first, fourth and fifth ladder spots.
After Saturday's match, the Cats host Idaho State on Sunday at 10 am. The Bengals also enter weekend play 4-2 in the conference. Next week, the Cats visit Idaho on April 11 and Eastern Washington on April 13. MSU finishes its regular season against Montana (April 18) and Southern Utah (April 19), both at home.
