MSU moves on in conference tournament
(April 23, 2026) – Montana State rode a wave of singles success to a 4-2 win over Idaho in the first round of the 2026 Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Championships in Phoenix on Thursday.
After dropping the doubles point, the Cats rolled past Idaho in four of the five completed singles matches and led one when it was abandoned. Each of MSU's singles wins came in straight sets.
Junior Andre Stewart's 6-4, 6-1 win over Mikolaj Lis at No. 2 singles squared the team score, then sophomore Yassin Elaroussy gave the Cats the lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Chetanna Amadike at the top ladder position. Idaho's Valentin Glasl beat Bobcat freshman David Ismanescu 6-2, 6-3 to recapture the lead, but it was short-lived.
At the fourth ladder spot, all-conference sophomore Eddie Biss took a 6-4, 6-2 win over Eric Wang to push MSU into the lead, 3-2. Then freshman Ethan Masselis topped Gabriel Moroder 7-5, 6-4 at No. 3 to move Montana State into the semifinals. At the fifth lineup spot, Camille Chantron led Noe De Col 6-2, 5-4 when the match was abandoned.
The win raises Montana State's season record to 8-12, and advances the Cats to the semifinals against top-seeded Northern Arizona on Friday at 9 am MDT. MSU also advanced to the semis in 2022, but this only the team's second semifinal appearance since 2016.
