Montana State takes 5-2 matinee victory
BOZEMAN, Mont. (April 10, 2026) – The drama, as it turns out, came early. But it didn't last.
Sacramento State won the doubles point in dramatic fashion, but Montana State took five of the six singles matches on its way to a 5-2 men's tennis win in the Bobcat-Anderson Tennis Center on Friday. The victory clinched MSU's place in the Big Sky Conference Tournament beginning April 23 in Phoenix, Ariz.
"The Big Sky Tournament was a big goal of ours for the season," said second-year MSU head coach Mateus Ceolin, "so this feels great. I'm very happy for the guys. They came ready to play today."
Freshman Max Calaquian earned a straight-sets victory at No. 6 singles to clinch the Bobcat victory, and Eddie Biss finished things with a 6-7 (3), 7-5, 10-3 win at No. 6. Unlike most recent matches though, which featured heroics from the bottom of the team's lineup, much of the heavy lifting on this day was done by the top of the order.
"They were locked in," Ceolin said of No. 1 singles player Yassin Elaroussy and No. 2 Andre Stewart. "Yassin and Andre were awesome. They spent no time on things that don't matter, they just played tennis. It was great to see."
The result was dominating 6-2, 6-1 victories by both that flipped MSU's 1-0 deficit to a 3-1 lead after Ethan Masselis sailed to a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 4. "When I look at those scores," Ceolin said, "it's obvious that the guys came our really, really dialed in today."
The doubles point certainly provided intensity.
On court three, Sac State and MSU traded service breaks at 3-3, and stayed on serve into the tie-breaker. The Hornets' Doni Gashi and Miles Whitehead jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but Yassin Elaroussy and Max Calaquian answered with three straight points to tie the score at 5-5. Sacramento State held serve for a 6-5 lead, then finished the doubles competition by winning on MSU's serve for a 7-5 victory.
Other than a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 singles by Nick Bowles over MSU's Camille Chantron, the doubles point provided most of Sacramento State's highlights. Montana State raised its record to 7-11 overall and 3-3 in Big Sky play, while the Hornets fall to 10-10, 1-4. MSU wraps up the regular season by hosting Montana on Saturday, April 18. The Hornets visit UM on Sunday.
