Montana State used a dominating offensive effort posting a season-high .350 attack and celebrated Allyssa Rizzo’s 2,000th career dig as it swept Idaho 25-19, 25-12, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon in Memorial Gym.
MOSCOW, Idaho – Montana State used a dominating offensive effort posting a season-high .350 attack and celebrated Allyssa Rizzo's 2,000th career dig as it swept Idaho 25-19, 25-12, 25-22 on Saturday afternoon in Memorial Gym.
All three Montana State (12-11, 8-6) outside hitters recorded double-figure kills and hit over .348 from the field. Senior Evi Wilson notched a match-high 15 kills, while Hannah Scott and Kira Thomsen added 11 and ten, respectively.
"It was a complete offensive effort," said MSU head coach Daniel Jones, who led MSU to its first victory in Moscow since Nov. 3, 1989. "It all starts at the service line and I think we were able to put a lot of pressure on them. I thought the kids that play specialty roles for us – Libby Christensen, Lexi Goroski and Sydney Mathison – really did an outstanding job."
Leading early in the opening set, the Bobcats recorded three consecutive points to take a 12-8 advantage following an Idaho (12-14, 8-6) hitting error. MSU was able to hold the margin for the remainder of the set before Emma Pence gave the Cats a 1-0 lead.
The second frame was one of MSU's most dominating offensive performances of the season as the team sided-out at a 100%. In all, the Bobcats notched 16 kills with just one error on 37 attempts for a .500 attack percentage.
"Our pin hitters really executed at a high percent," Jones said. "They were hitting at a high level and hitting with a lot of intelligence. They executed the game plan perfectly."
Montana State had to rally in the final set trailing 12-6 after a hitting miscue. MSU chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 16-all following a Vandal hitting error. Tied at 18-all, the Bobcats posted four unanswered points capped by a Wilson kill. Idaho fought back to 22-all, before the Bobcats closed out the match on back-to-back Idaho errors.
Rizzo, a senior libero from Crestwood, Ill., posted a match-high 12 digs, getting her 2,000th career save in the second set. Rizzo, along with former Sacramento State standout Kristin Lutes (2003-06) and current Idaho State outside hitter Haylie Keck, are the only players in Big Sky history to reach the milestone.
"Huge congratulations to Rizzo," Jones said. "She is the ultimate team player and is a big reason we are having so much success this season."
Pence, a freshman middle blocker from Carson City, Nevada, paced MSU at the net with four blocks, while setter Allie Lynch dished out 37 assists.
MSU will close out its regular-season home schedule when it hosts Southern Utah on Thursday, Nov. 14 and Northern Arizona, Saturday, Nov. 16.
