Montana State senior Evi Wilson matched a season-best 19 kills to guide three Bobcats in double-figures as MSU cruised to a 25-17, 20-25, 25-23, 25-15 win over Eastern Washington on Thursday at Reese Court.
Wilson, a product of Vancouver, Wash., finished the match with a hefty .368 attack mark, committing just five errors in 38 swings. Also in double-digit kills were Kira Thomsen 17 and Hannah Scott 12.
"I'm super pleased with our effort," said MSU head coach Daniel Jones. "It was a great team performance. We had a little hiccup in set two, but we stayed focused and did a nice job closing out the match."
Montana State (11-11, 7-6) trailed 7-3 in the early part of the opening set, before going on a 12-5 run sparked by four kills from Wilson. MSU closed out the game on an Emma Pence kill.
Eastern Washington (5-20, 3-10) built a 19-13 lead in the second frame, before MSU went on a 6-0 run sparked by the serving of Lexi Goroski. The run pulled the Bobcats to within 19-18. EWU answered with three consecutive points and held on for the win.
MSU regained the momentum in the third stanza taking a 14-9 lead before the Eagles tied the score at 21-all. Following an Eastern Washington hitting error, Scott served back-to-back aces to give MSU the cushion it needed, and a Thomsen kill put the Bobcats up 2-1.
In the final set, Montana State pulled away from nine-all with a 5-0 run and back-to-back kills by Wilson gave the Bobcats a 14-9 advantage. MSU pushed its lead to 22-12 and closed out the set following an EWU service error.
Setter Allie Lynch also contributed to the Bobcat attack recording a double-double with 49 assists and ten digs.
Defensively, senior libero Allyssa Rizzo registered 27 digs, averaging a whopping 6.75 per set. The total also gives Rizzo 1,992 for her career. She will most likely become just the third player in Big Sky Conference history to go over the 2,000-dig plateau on Saturday when the Cats face Idaho in Moscow.
Montana State held a commanding edge on the stat sheet outhitting Eastern Washington by 20 kills. The Cats also got the job done on the service line holding an 8-1 margin in aces.
"We stressed our serve-receive game a lot this week," Jones said. "I thought we nailed our serving, and our receivers really stepped-up. We did a nice job controlling things on our side of the night and we know our destiny is in our hands."
With the win, the Bobcats reached seven Big Sky Conference victories, its most since recording nine league wins in 2012.
MSU will face Idaho on Saturday at 2 p.m. (MT).
