Bobcat Track & Field Reveals Indoor Season Award Winners

Montana State track and field announced its season award winners following the conclusion of the indoor slate.

Montana State track and field revealed its season award winners following the conclusion of the indoor slate.

Recording the most points for the Bobcats' men's and women's squads and earning Top Gun Award honors were, respectively, Noah Martin and Amanda Jaynes.

Martin moved to seventh all-time on the MSU top 10 chart in the men's heptathlon during the 2017-18 season. His 4,977 points he accumulated at the Big Sky Conference Championships earned him a bronze medal, his second indoor medal during his collegiate career. The sophomore finished fourth in the high jump at the Big Sky meet as well. Martin completed the year with first-place showings in six events, including the top point total at the MSU Mulitis meet from Jan. 8-9.

Jaynes achieved the first medal-winning performance of her indoor career with the Bobcats by taking runner-up in the 60-meter hurdles at the Big Sky Track and Field Championships. The senior sprinter became the school record holder in the event during the course of the season, notching the top spot all-time by crossing the finish line in 8.50 seconds. She made the program's all-time top 10 list during the season in the 4x400 relay twice, finishing the year at the second spot as the anchor leg of a relay that finished with a time of 3:44.34.

Jaynes took first in each 60 hurdles race she competed in heading into the Big Sky meet and had two first-place showings in the 200.

Kyle Douglass and Truanne Roginske were named MSU's Outstanding Field Event Performers.

Douglass wrapped up his indoor Bobcat career with a silver-medal performance in the shot put at the Big Sky Championships. The Missoula, Mont., native moved up to third in program history in the event with a toss of 60-05.25 at the Powder River Dual against Wyoming on Jan. 27. Douglass took first in all but two of the shot put events he competed in throughout the slate.

Roginske leaped to seventh on the MSU all-time top 10 in the long jump with a mark of 18-08 at the Powder River Dual. Roginske finished first on three occasions for MSU throughout the season, capping the year by participating in three events at the Big Sky meet.

Multiple Bobcats earned Outstanding Track Performer status, with Diego Leon, Jadin Casey, Kelsi Lasota and Jaynes honored.

Leon finished his season with an appearance at the NCAA Indoor Championships in the mile. The senior qualified for the meet by running his second sub-four mile and earned all-conference accolades by running on MSU's third-place distance medley relay squad at the Big Sky meet. Casey shared honors on the men's side after a strong season for the 400 specialist. The Stevensville, Mont., native moved into the fourth slot on the program's all-time top 10 list in both the 200 and 400. He also was the anchor leg on the Bobcats' silver medal 4x400 relay that broke the school-record time by registering a mark of 3:13.77.

Lasota shared honors with Jaynes on the women's team after a strong debut season as a Bobcat. The junior moved her way into the Bobcat record book in three events. She currently sits second all-time in the 5,000 (16:42.87), ninth in the 3,000 (9:40.32) and 10th in the mile (4:51.63). Lasota wrapped up the indoor season by finishing second at the Big Sky meet in the 3,000 and fourth in the 5,000.

Leon, along with Alec Nehring and Alex Hellenberg, earned Most Improved honors for MSU.

Nehring received all-conference accolades for the first time in his collegiate career when he took third at the Big Sky Championships in the shot put. The Manhattan, Mont., native competed in the shot put and weight throw throughout the season, giving MSU a 1-2 punch in both events throughout the season. He joined MSU in the top 10 in the shot put with his career-best toss of 56-11.25 at the Big Sky meet.

Hellenberg was a standout for the MSU jumpers and competed in the pole vault, long jump and triple jump during the indoor campaign. The sophomore participated in all three at the conference meet and finished 13th in the pole vault. Hellenberg's best meet came at the Powder River Dual. She moved to fifth all-time in MSU history in the triple jump (37-10.50) and eighth in the long jump (18-07.25).

MSU's Freshman Award winners were Chris Bianchini and Trisha Carlson. Bianchini took fourth at the conference championships in the men's 800 and sits eighth all-time in program history in the event with his time of 1:51.23. Carlson followed up a strong cross country season by earning all-conference honors as a part of MSU's third-place distance medley relay squad at the Big Sky meet. Carlson also took ninth in the mile and is sixth among MSU runners ever in the 800 with her time of 2:10.90.

The Bobcats also recognized its letterwinners awarded during the 2017-18 season. MSU begins its outdoor track schedule this weekend with the Al Manual Northwest Invitational.
