Blue/Gold Scrimmage Complete, Bobcats Eye Season Opener in Shroyer Gym Friday

The gold team took three of four sets as the Bobcats knocked out the early season jitters before they host their season-opening tournament next weekend
The Montana State volleyball team held its Blue/Gold Scrimmage Saturday, Aug. 19, in Shroyer Gymnasium. The gold team came away with a victory by taking three sets (25-14, 19-25, 25-19, 15-6), but even more significant, knocked out the early season jitters before MSU opens its 2017 schedule on its home court.
"We got exactly what we wanted out of the scrimmage," coach Daniel Jones said. "We were able to go through our pre-match routine, give them a feel for what game day will be like, see how they respond under the spotlight of being in uniform and having a crowd.
"It was great to see those things and nobody was fazed by the situation. We have six freshmen and they all stepped up and played really well. We've got 10 returners and they all did a solid job too."
The gold team clearly took control in the first set en route to its 11-point margin. Despite a six-point edge to win the second set, the blue team easily held a lead throughout the frame including scoring the first six points. The third set was much more competitive before the gold team closed it out in the fourth.
Despite the outcome, a variety of different lineups were used with setters switching between the blue and gold squads. The Bobcats will have several options to throw at opponents depending on which lineup is clicking.
"I think ideally we'd like to see closer sets," Jones said. "We changed the lineups quite a bit, switched kids back and forth between the two teams, just seeing the different combinations. I think that had a small impact, but I think the thing I was really impressed with was how the girls responded to being down. There were a couple of occasions when a team would be down significantly, but they responded in the right way and kept fighting."
The Bobcats reported for Fall Camp on Monday, Aug. 7, and have spent two weeks working out the details for the 2017 season. Montana State will begin to taper this week and go through its pre-match routine as the Bobcats gear up for their debut on Friday, Aug. 25, with a 12 p.m. matchup versus Air Force.
Between now and then, the MSU coaching staff will evaluate its roster as it looks ahead to its opening-season tournament inside the confines of Shroyer Gym.
"I think at some point we'll have to settle on a lineup as a coaching staff and figure that out," Jones said. "We've been up front with the girls, we really don't know it yet, they've been making it hard on us. It's exactly what we want, we want them to be competing and playing at their best. It's great because it makes our job tough, but now we have to make some decisions."
MSU hosts Air Force, Gonzaga and Illinois at the Bobcat Classic which is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Friday. Six matches will take place over two days. Tickets are available for the entire tournament and they can be purchased at msubobcats.com/tickets, by visiting the Bobcat Ticket Office or calling 406-994-CATS.
