The Montana State volleyball team completed its stay at the Nebraska Ameritas Players Challenge dropping a 25-12, 25-14, 25-20 decision to Gonzaga, Saturday afternoon in Devaney Center.
Gonzaga (7-3) out-hit Montana State (2-7) .397 to -.049 over the first two sets to take a 2-0 advantage at intermission. MSU regrouped in the final set and held a 15-14 lead on an Alexandra Rader kill, but the Zags rattled off four straight points and secured the match. The set featured seven ties and three lead changes.
"We got going in the third set but by that time it's a little too late," said MSU head coach JJ Riley. "That will change and we will get better at being ready to compete from the get go."
The Bobcats dropped all three matches over the weekend. MSU has played three nationally ranked squads in its last four matches, including No. 1 Nebraska on Friday.
"This weekend pushed us to our limits and showed us were we need to do some growing up quickly and make changes," Riley said. "We have identified what needs to change and the time for action is upon us."
Montana State was led by Chase Doughty with a team-high eight kills, while Natalie Passeck added four kills and seven digs. Libero Allyssa Rizzo posted a team-best 11 digs.
"I think Passeck, Rizzo, and Kiana (Black) all worked really hard to provide the leadership and fire that we need," Riley said. "I see a couple of girls catching on and we are encouraging the rest of them to jump on board."
For her efforts, Passeck was named to the all-tournament team.
Montana State opens Big Sky Conference play on Thursday when it hosts Idaho in Shroyer Gym.
