Montana out-hit Montana State .231 to .169 and used a 48-36 advantage in kills, en route to a straight set 25-20, 26-24, 25-19 victory, Friday night in Dahlberg Arena.
"It's a disappointing loss as we could have been better on our side," said MSU second-year head coach JJ Riley. "The girls are playing hard which is not an issue; we just weren't great on some responsibilities when we needed to be."
Montana State (5-18, 3-11) got out to an early 5-1 lead in the opening set. The two rivals traded points and were tied 12 times before Montana (5-19, 2-12) broke away at 18-all with four consecutive points to secure a 1-0 lead.
It was MSU who rallied in the second set. Trailing 22-17, the Bobcats rattled off a 7-1 run to serve set point at 24-23. The run was sparked by a combination of blocking, serving and kills by Evi Wilson and Natalie Passeck. UM regrouped and scored the final three points following a couple of Bobcat hitting miscues.
"This team is battling and we just need to keep working hard to execute things the right way," Riley said. "This process of growth is ever evolving, and to be honest, this group is learning some important lessons as we continue on this journey."
The Grizzlies out-hit the Bobcats .250 to .132 in the final stanza to win the match.
MSU was led by Alexandra Rader and Chase Doughty with nine kills, while Passeck added eight. Defensively, Allyssa Rizzo posted a match-high 18 kills and Audra Dugan registered a match-high four blocks.
"We have the weekend off which will be great for everyone to get some rest and refocus our minds for this next road trip coming up," Riley commented.
Montana State will play at Eastern Washington on Thursday, Nov. 10.
