"I'm proud of the way our kids battled in the opening set," said MSU head coach JJ Riley. "To be down to such a good defensive team as Sacramento State, that knows how to extend rallies and forces its opponents into mistakes, we stayed focused and really got our block established. It was nice to see our student-athletes make adjustments. We're going in the right direction."
Sacramento State (16-11, 10-3) quickly turned the table in the second stanza, out-hitting Montana State (5-17, 3-10) .244 to -.059 to even the match heading into intermission. In the third set, MSU held a 15-12 advantage midway through the frame, before the Hornets rattled off a 7-1 run and never looked back.
Sacramento State out-hit Montana State .500 to .314 in the fourth set to earn the win.
"Overall, I thought we played well," Riley said. "Obviously, we had some breakdowns, but again I think we're continuing to move in a good direction. Our kids made a nice adjustment from our 6-2 offense to a 5-1. It's something we practice every day, but it was the first time in a match situation."
Sophomore Natalie Passeck led all players with a match-high 15 kills, while Chase Doughty matched a career-high with 13 kills and Alexandra Rader added ten. Setter Katie Rutecki posted her third double-double of the season with 33 assists and 10 digs. Freshman libero Allyssa Rizzo notched a team-best 20 digs. At the net, MSU was paced by Kiana Black with six blocks.
Sacramento State was paced by Shannon Boyle with 14 kills and 14 digs.
MSU will play at Montana on Saturday night at 7 p.m. in Dahlberg Arena.
