“I thought we did a great job blocking, but gave them leads in every set, which forced us to have to mount a comeback,” Riley said. “We were close, but fell short.”
Despite a career-high 21 kills from freshman Natalie Passeck the Montana State volleyball squad dropped a hard-fought 22-25, 25-23, 34-32, 25-19 decision to Portland State, Saturday night in the Stott Center.
Montana State (3-15, 1-9) opened the match taking the first stanza out-hitting Portland State (7-15, 3-7) .324 to .104. The Vikings held a two-point advantage in the late stages of the set, but the Bobcats closed out the win on a 6-1 run.
PSU held a four-point cushion in the late going of the second game at 22-18, before MSU rallied once again to tie the score at 23-all. The Vikings used a kill via Eva Linden and a Montana State hitting miscue to even the match heading into intermission.
In the epic third set, the score was tied 11 times with three lead changes. Portland State owned four set points at 24-20, but another Montana State rally evened the score at 24-all. MSU fought off six more set points before taking a 31-30 lead on a kill by Natalee Godfrey. The Vikings answered with two straight points for its 11th set point of the game. Passeck tied the set at 32-all on a kill, but PSU closed out the stanza on two consecutive kills by Linden.
Montana State ran out of steam in the final set as PSU out-hit the Bobcats .194 to .097 to win the match.
"I thought we did a really good job of keeping our composure and moving on quickly from points, which is one of the biggest lessons we are trying to impart on the team," said MSU first-year head coach JJ Riley. "So we will celebrate those moments and keep growing.
"The team commented that they felt calmer and looser while playing, so that is great and we need to push to replicate that feeling every time," Riley added.
Passeck, a product of Parker, Colorado, posted her team-leading seventh double-double of the year adding 11 digs in the loss. Also in double-digit kills for the Bobcats was Godfrey with ten winners, while hitting .261 from the field and adding a season-high eight blocks.
Montana State had a season-high 14.5 team blocks. Also contributing for MSU at the net were Katie Harrington with six blocks and Alexandra Rader and Kiana Black with four, apiece.

Defensively, the Bobcats were led by Kasey Altman and Dana Vestman with 21 and 18 digs, respectively.
Portland State was paced by Linden and Pati Anae with 21 kills, each.
