Northern Colorado rides quick start to 3-0 win
Northern Colorado rode a quick start and efficient hitting to a 3-0 win over Montana State in Big Sky volleyball action in Greeley on Thursday.
The Bears earned a 25-19, 25-16, 25-23 victory over MSU, out-hitting the Bobcats .250 to .115. UNC's Timarie Nymeyer led all players with 10 kills while hitting .389.
"We need to figure out how to start faster," said Bobcat coach JJ Riley. "The staff will look at what we can do to get the team firing on all cylinders from the start."
Northern Colorado scored eight of the first 10 points of set one. Nymeyer and Kendra Cunningham each logged a pair of kills in that stretch, while two Bobcat hitting errors aided UNC's cause. The Cats never drew closer than five points.
Riley said that an unexpected offensive configuration employed by UNC fueled the Bears. "UNC came out with a new lineup," Riley said, "because they had a setter return from injury and it took time for us to adjust. I have to give credit to our players for making adjustments and figuring some things out in that third set."
The Cats stayed in set two longer than in set one, evening the score at 9-9 after back-to-back kills by Loni Kruen and one by Kortney Lockey. UNC went on a 5-1 run, though, and cruised to a 25-16 win.
Game three was a different story. MSU jumped out to a 4-1 lead, and held an advantage at 19-18. Northern Colorado scored seven of the next 11 points, though, to grab the victory.
"This team is strong," he said. "We will keep focusing on making improvements daily."
Northern Colorado raised its record to 5-11 overall, 1-2 in league play, while MSU falls to 3-7 overall, 1-2 in the conference. MSU plays at North Dakota on Saturday.
