Bobcat Spikers Efficient in Blue/Gold Scrimmage

“I thought we were very efficient with the offense and did a nice job minimizing our errors,” Weindel said. “There were times when we did a pretty decent job sustaining a high-level of volleyball and that is something we focus on every day.”
Sophomore Loni Kreun notched a team-high 18 kills, while senior Zoe Gogan and sophomore Cassie Krueger added 15 apiece, as the Blue squad swept the Gold team 26-24, 25-18, 25-8, Saturday afternoon in Shroyer Gym.
Despite playing without top offensive threat Kennadie Clute (ankle) and starting right-side hitter Eli Svisco (concussion), third-year head coach Kyle Weindel was pleased with the adeptness of the Bobcat attack.
"I thought we were very efficient with the offense and did a nice job minimizing our errors," Weindel said. "There were times when we did a pretty decent job sustaining a high-level of volleyball and that is something we focus on every day."
The opening set went back and forth, before the Blue squad pulled away from a 24-all tie with two straight points, winning on a freshman Kiana Black kill. The middle stanza was tight midway through the set until Krueger took over with five kills, including the game winner. Blue jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the final game and cruised to the win on a Gogan kill.
"Loni is a do-it-all kid and had a solid scrimmage," Weindel said. "Zoe has been incredible all fall and Cassie is 100-percent improved from where she was this spring. Zoe, Cassie and Alex (Rader) did a great job filling in for Kennadie and Eli."
Sophomore Katie Harrington guided the Blue squad with 34 assists, while freshman Megan Robinson recorded 35 assists for the Gold team.
"Katie has been with us since last spring and she knows our attackers and she knows the system I want to run and speed," Weindel said. "We need to fine-tune a couple things, but it's like having a veteran setter. She has a pretty good grasp on the position."
Returning starting middle blocker Natalee Godfrey paced MSU at the net with a team-high five blocks, while senior libero Kasey Schlatter and freshman defensive specialist Kasey Altman chipped in 14 and 13 digs, respectively.
"We expect a lot of points and blocks from Natalee and she didn't disappoint," Weindel said.
Weindel also got a glimpse of the future as freshman middle blocker Jolie Meade finished with 12 kills and a .750 attack mark.
MSU will open its season at the University of Utah tournament against the Utes on Friday.
