Weindel Pleased With Bobcat Volleyball Progress; Blue/Gold Slated for Saturday

“Things have been going exceptionally well,” Weindel said. “We’ve had a few surprises from a number of players and that has really pushed us to be better. We’re playing at a higher level than where we were last year at this time.”
Third-year head coach Kyle Weindel couldn't be happier with his young team's progress after 18 practices into the 2014 Montana State volleyball season. Weindel returns eight letterwinners, including four starters to the squad.

Returning to the starting rotation is Kennadie Clute, MSU's top offensive player from last fall. Clute, a product of Spokane, Washington, was the 2013 Big Sky Conference Co-Freshman of the Year, after notching 513 kills and 560 points. Weindel will also look to juniors Natalee Godfrey and Eli Svisco for firepower.
"Natalee and Eli are playing as good as I've ever seen them," Weindel said. "We'll get a ton of kills out of Clute, but Godfrey and Svisco are going to be an important element to our success."
Weindel will get a good look at his squad during the annual Blue/Gold scrimmage set for Saturday, August 23 at 2:30 p.m. in Shroyer Gym. The match, which is free and open to the public, will feature three set to 25 points.
"We'll be looking for energy and intensity from both sides of the net," Weindel said. We'll mix up teams and will be evaluating who and from where we are scoring points."
The Bobcats will open its regular-season at the University of Utah tournament, August 29-30 in Salt Lake City.
"Before the season-opener, we'll need to fine-tune our passing and offense," Weindel said.
Running the Bobcat offense will be sophomore Katie Harrington, who transferred into the Bobcat program at semester break last winter.
"Katie is really doing a nice job," Weindel said. "It's also nice to have freshman setter Megan Robinson in the gym as it gives us two quality setters, which in the long run will make us a better team."
Defensively, senior Kasey Schlatter will anchor the back-row as starting libero.
"The theme for the season is to be able to sustain a high level of play, while being efficient," Weindel said.
Weindel will get a good sense for the team's effectiveness on Saturday afternoon.
