The Montana State volleyball team has added West Coast Conference power Brigham Young to its 2013 schedule, announced Bobcat head coach Kyle Weindel on Thursday.
The match will be played Sept. 10 in Provo, Utah, and will be nationally televised on BYU-TV. The Cougars finished its 2012 campaign ranked 16th in the nation, after advancing to the Sweet 16 at the NCAA Tournament. BYU finished the season 28-4 overall, which included winning its first West Coast Conference regular-season title.
“Being able to add BYU to our schedule is a great step for our program and one we must take in order to earn the right to compete for championships and advance in the NCAA Tournament at the end of each season,” Weindel said. “We need to play in as many high level matches as possible, especially with our young team.”
The Bobcats and Cougars have met five times in a series dating back to the 1979 season. BYU holds a 5-0 advantage over MSU with the last meeting coming Sept. 1, 2005 in Provo as Brigham Young handed Montana State a 3-0 setback.
“I want to be able to create relationships with top regional programs outside of the Big Sky Conference,” Weindel said. “(BYU Head Coach) Shawn Olmstead and I played against each other when we were in college so that relationship was already there. BYU has agreed to return to Bozeman in the future. I hope this relationship evolves into an annual event for our two institutions. I am really looking forward to seeing the Bobcats compete against this regional power.”
With the addition of BYU, the Bobcats now have a thirty-one match schedule. MSU will open its 2013 season at the Wyoming Invitational Aug. 30. MSU's first home match is slated for Sept. 13 against Gonzaga as part of the Bobcat Classic.
