Three preseason tournaments followed by a 20-match Big Sky Conference slate highlight the 2013 Montana State volleyball schedule, announced second-year head coach Kyle Weindel on Friday.
“The goal of year number two was to increase the level of competition outside of conference play,” Weindel said. “I think we achieved that goal. As the team evolves from year to year the goal is to constantly challenge them to play better and better teams.”
The Bobcats, who finished 15-14 overall, last season, and made MSU's first Big Sky Conference tournament appearance since 2005, will open the fall campaign at the University of Wyoming Tournament, Aug. 30-31 in Laramie. The UW tourney will feature the Cowgirls, MSU, Idaho, Drake and Stetson. The following weekend the Bobcats will play in the Morehead State Invitational against the Eagles, IUPUI and Saint Louis.
The 2013 preseason will be capped with the return of the Montana State Bobcat Classic. It will mark the 15th time the Bobcats have hosted the event and the first since the 2008 season. Joining Montana State will be South Dakota, Akron and Gonzaga.
“The highlight of this year's schedule is our home tournament on Sept 13-14 where we will host Akron, South Dakota and Gonzaga,” Weindel said. “This will be the first time since 2008 that MSU has hosted a fall tournament and it will be a great event for are fans.”
Montana State will open its Big Sky Conference season hosting North Dakota on Sept. 20, and conclude with the annual Shake Shroyer match against Montana on Nov. 25.
“Big Sky play is always challenging,” Weindel said. “There are several key returners for each program, and coupled with a tough travel schedule, any team is capable of winning or losing on any particular weekend.
“We look to capitalize on last year's success and continue to increase the level and consistency of our play,” Weindel said. “Our goal is always to be playing our best volleyball at the end of the year in order for us to earn the right to compete for a conference championship.”
