A BOBCAT HOMECOMING OF SORTS:
After dispatching the Quinnipiac Bobcats and Akron last weekend in Ohio, the Montana State Bobcats return to the Buckeye State this weekend to compete in the Ohio University Bobcat Volleyball Invitational in Athens. This weekend will also mark the return of Kyle Weindel, MSU volleyball head coach, to OU, a place he called home as an assistant coach the past four seasons. MSU will open the tournament against Belmont, Friday, Sept. 7 at 8 a.m. (MST), followed by Niagara at 3 p.m. Montana State will conclude action on Saturday, Sept. 8 when its faces Ohio University at 2 p.m.
MONTANA STATE ZIPS BY AKRON FIELD:
Last weekend, the Bobcats captured first place at the University of Akron tournament. MSU played just two matches as Southeastern Louisiana was unable to travel to Ohio due to Hurricane Isaac. The Bobcats opened tournament play with a 25-20, 25-9, 25-15 win over Quinnipiac and followed it with a 25-16, 25-18, 14-25, 26-24 win over the Zips.
TOP 'CAT:
Jennifer Lundquist, a senior setter from Surrey, British Columbia, was named tournament most valuable player at the Akron Invitational, after averaging 8.43 assists, 1.43 kills and 2.14 digs per set. She also added two service aces and four blocks, while hitting a whopping .714 from the field.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Montana State's first opponent at the Ohio Invitational is Belmont. The Bruins are currently 1-5 overall, which includes a 3-0 setback to Big Sky Conference preseason favorite Northern Colorado. Belmont has four players averaging 2.00 kills per set or better, led by Alex Martin at 2.47 kps. Niagara is 3-3 overall, after going 2-1 last weekend at George Mason. The Purple Eagles have been paced this fall by Kari Honomichi, who averages 4.17 kills and 2.48 digs per set. Niagara has made three consecutive NCAA Championship appearances. The Ohio Bobcats are 1-5 overall, but that ledger includes losses to No. 11 Pepperdine and No. 17 Oregon. Picked to finish first in the Mid-American Conference Eastern Division, OU has been led in the early season by Kelly Lamberti, who averages 3.64 kills and 3.14 digs per outing.
QUICK SETS:
Montana State has done a much better job from behind the service line this fall. The Bobcats are averaging 1.48 aces per game. Last weekend, MSU averaged 2.43 aces and held a 17-4 advantage from behind the line...The Bobcats hit .259 at the Akron Invitational, collectively, and have notched a .224 attack mark to date. Last season, the Bobcats ended the year hitting .170 from the field. MSU has five players hitting .220 or better this season, including Jennifer Lundquist at .640. Lundquist has yet to make a hitting error this fall...blocking is another area in which the Bobcats have made big strides. MSU is averaging 2.29 blocks, compared to just 1.91 bps, last season...Taylar Barney paces the Bobcats, averaging 1.19 per contest. Last weekend, MSU doubled-up its opponents at the net...junior Sarah Horton is currently ranked second in the Big Sky Conference averaging 4.14 kills per set...Jennifer Lundquist is listed 7th averaging 8.43 assists per contest...Taylar Barney and Nicole Baker are ranked fourth and sixth, respectively, at .52 and .43 aces per game...Taylar Barney is listed third in the league in blocks per set at 1.19 per set.
