Bobcat Spikers Earn AVCA Team Academic Honors

The Montana State volleyball team has garnered American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic honors for its work in the classroom for the 2011-12 season.
The Montana State volleyball team has garnered American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic honors for its work in the classroom for the 2011-12 season.
To be honored by the AVCA, teams must have at least a 3.30 cumulative grade-point average. Montana State was just one of three teams (Northern Arizona, Northern Colorado) within the Big Sky Conference to win the academic award.
“I'm extremely proud of our players for winning this award,” said first-year head coach Kyle Weindel. “Typically only 20 percent of NCAA Division I programs win this award yearly. The team worked very hard last spring in the classroom and this is a reward for all of their hard work.”
The Team Academic Award has become one of the AVCA's fastest growing awards programs, seeing an impressive surge in teams honored over the past several years. Since the 2000-2001 season, the number of recipients has increased every single year but one, while amassing an overall 200% increase over the span of the last decade. Since the award's inception in 1993, the award has risen by an astounding 760%. NCAA Division I recorded their highest-ever total number of recipients, honoring 102 programs.
“Many coaches tell us they take more pride in and hear more positive feedback about winning the AVCA Team Academic Award than anything else they do all year,” said AVCA Executive Director Kathy DeBoer.
Last fall, seven Bobcats earned Big Sky Conference all academic honors, including Rachelle Allen, Nicole Baker, Lauren Curtis, Kellee Kackman, Shayne Kybartas, Chelsea Oemcke and Kasey Schlatter.
The MSU volleyball team also received AVCA Team Academic honors in 2002, 2003 and 2009.
