Montana State head coach Kyle Weindel finally got a chance to watch the Bobcats compete against someone other than themselves and he came away pleased with the MSU volleyball team's performance at the Utah Invitational, Saturday afternoon.
The Bobcats split its opening set against Utah State, dropping the first game 25-23, before rebounding for a 25-20 victory over the Aggies. MSU cruised past Utah Valley 25-11, 25-14 in the second match, before finishing the tournament with a straight set 26-24, 25-22 win over Salt Lake Community College.
“I thought we did a nice job passing and defending,” Weindel said. “We also did a very solid job from the service line. We were able to keep a lot of balls from hitting the floor and we turned them into points.”
As a team, the Bobcats hit .222 from the field. MSU was paced by Taylar Barney at .467, and Jennifer Lundquist at .389. Kasey Schlatter and Nicole Baker also received kudos for outstanding passing and defense.
Additional Weindel Quotes:
On the weekend: "I am pleased with how the team competed this past weekend. It was great for me to see the things that we have been working on as a team show in matches. I am especially pleased how well we served and passed along with our team defense. We were able to block balls and control attacks which allowed up to stay in system when in transition. These things have been a focus of ours this spring and it has paid off. Everyone has been working so hard this spring and I am very happy with our effort and where we are in our training."
Individually: "Jen (Lundquist) did a real nice job of running the offense – this is a new system for her and she did a great job of putting our attackers in really good positions to get kills. Nicole (Baker) did an exceptional job running the back row. Due to her leadership we executed our defensive system, were able to pass the ball at a very high level and managed to stay in system most of the time while limiting our opponents to less than one ace per set."
