Bobcat Spikers Head to Windy City

The Montana State volleyball team will travel to Chicago this weekend for three matches against Windy City opponents. Montana State will open the Labor Day weekend at Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. (MST).

THE WINDY CITY:
The Montana State volleyball team will travel to Chicago this weekend for three matches against Windy City opponents. Montana State will open the Labor Day weekend at Illinois-Chicago on Saturday, Sept. 3 at 10 a.m. (MST). The Bobcats will conclude action on Sunday as they face DePaul at 11 a.m., followed by Loyola-Chicago at 6 p.m. All matches will be played at the home venue of each opponent.
THAT WAS THE WEEK THAT WAS:
Montana State dropped four matches at the Georgia Southern-Spring Hill Suites Tournament last weekend in Statesboro. MSU opened played going the distance with Jacksonville, before falling in five games. The Bobcats then dropped back-to-back 3-1 decisions to South Dakota State and Stephen F. Austin, before suffering a 3-0 setback to GSU in the final match of the tournament. Sophomore Sarah Horton garnered all-tournament honors after averaging 2.81 kills and 1.75 digs, while hitting .159 from the field. Sophomore Nicole Baker in her first ever start at the libero position ended the tournament averaging a team-high 4.31 digs per set.
THE SCOUTING REPORT:
Montana State will look for its first win of the season this weekend in Chicago. MSU's opening opponent, Illinois-Chicago, is 3-0 overall and faces DePaul on Friday, before meeting the Bobcats. A member of the Horizon League, UIC is off to its best start since the 2000 season. DePaul is 1-3 after playing in the University of Wyoming Invitational last weekend in Laramie. The BlueDemons posted its lone victory with a five-set win over South Dakota. DePaul is led by Natalie Rizzo, who averaged 1.93 kills and 1.07 blocks per game. Loyola Chicago is 0-2 and will play Northwestern and either DePaul of UIC before facing MSU. The Ramblers are paced by freshman Laura Purcell, who is averaging 3.17 kills and 3.50 digs per set.
QUICK SETS:
Montana State had a .319 attack mark in its match with Stephen F. Austin last weekend. The mark was the best hitting performance for the Bobcats under the direction of head coach Sara Schaub. MSU totaled 53 kills, while committing just 10 errors on 135 attempts. In all, four Bobcats players hit over .400, including a team-best .583 by senior Alex Penewell. The last time a Montana State hit over .300 was in 2007, when the 'Cats posted a .394 attack mark in its win over North Florida...Libero Nicole Baker posted MSU's first 20+ dig mark of the season, when she dug-up 20 saves against South Dakota State...Sophomore Sarah Horton was named to the Georgia Southern all-tournament team after averaging 2.81 kills and 1.75 digs last weekend. The Fresno, Calif., native had her best outing against Stephen F. Austin with 16 kills, a .444 attack mark and six digs.
HITHER AND YON:
With stops in Georgia, Illinois, Missouri and California in non-conference action, the Bobcats will add over 11,000 miles to its Frequent Flyer card.
