Another win, another milestone.
Another win, another milestone.
The Montana State (8-7) volleyball team received strong performances by Rachelle Allen and Jennifer Lundquist to sweep Cal State Bakersfield 25-21, 25-19, 25-17, Monday night in Shroyer Gym.
The victory upped the Bobcats' record to 8-7 overall giving MSU its most wins since the 2005 squad notched a 15-15 mark. In addition, the win gives Montana State three consecutive victories on the Shroyer Gym hardwood- the longest since winning four-in-a-row in the latter part of the 2004 campaign.
“I thought we were aggressive and played confident over the past two matches,” said MSU head coach Sara Schaub. “Our hitting percentage is up where it needs to be.”
For the second straight match MSU hit over .275 from the field, including a whopping .393 mark in the second stanza.
In the first set, the Bobcats broke away from 20-all with a 5-1 run sparked by two kills from freshman Sarah Horton, including the game winner.
Cal State Bakersfield (0-19) jumped out to a 12-8 advantage in set two, before MSU battled back with a 10-3 run to stake an 18-15 lead following another Horton kill. Montana State closed out the set on an Alex Penewell winner.
In the final stanza, Montana State used a 9-2 run to slip away from a 16-15 edge as the Roadrunners posted six hitting errors down the stretch.
MSU was led by Allen with 14 kills, a .414 attack mark and seven digs. Lundquist dished out 27 assists, while adding five kills, a .625 attack mark, six digs, five blocks and two service aces.
“The big positive coming out of the last three matches has been the confidence Jennifer Lundquist has gained,” Schaub said. “We'd like her to get even more attacks as she brings a different dimension to the team.”
Defensively, the Bobcats were paced by Meghan Albiston and Jodeen Rademacher with 14 and 11 digs, respectively. Junior middle blocker Chelsea Oemcke matched Lundquist with five blocks, while freshman defensive specialist Nicole Baker came off the bench to notch four service aces.
MSU will get back to Big Sky Conference action at Weber State on Oct. 1.
