(Feb. 27, 2026) – After two weeks of work on the practice courts, Montana State men's tennis coach Mateus Ceolin said his team is ready.
Ready to compete against another team. Ready for the camaraderie and team togetherness a road trip offers. And ready to open Big Sky Conference play. "Our sole focus has been on Portland State," Ceolin said of the Bobcats' Big Sky opener at Portland State on Saturday at 11 am MT at the Tualatin Hills Tennis Center.
"We're ready for the challenge," he said. "And we're excited."
The Bobcats enter Saturday's league opener with a 3-4 record on the season, but haven't played a match since a February 5 loss at regional power BYU. MSU fell to the Cougars 4-3, a match that snapped a two-game winning streak that featured non-league wins against Whitworth and Idaho State.
Ceolin said the Cats have used the interim period between college competitions well. "We had three really good weeks of working on getting better," he said. "We worked on individual skills, on honing our doubles play, and we really competed hard against each other."
The twin secrets to Montana State's success has resided with a talented group of freshmen that occupy the bottom of the Bobcats lineup. David Ismanescu owns a 4-1 record at No. 5 singles, while Ethan Masselis is 4-1 at the bottom ladder position. With junior Andre Stewart anchoring the team at No. 1 singles, sophomores Yassin Elaroussy (2-1 at No. 2), Oumar Diallo (1-1 at No. 3, 1-5 overall) and Camille Chantron (1-4 at No. 4, 2-5 overall) have improved throughout the season.
PSU enters Saturday's contest with a 3-6 mark, with wins over George Fox, UC Santa Cruz and Lewis-Clark State. Sophomore Maas Schotanus leads the Vikings in singles with a 4-0 mark between the second and third ladder spots. Freshmen Aarjun Pandit and Ignacio Ruiz stand 4-2 as a doubles tandem, and Pandit has three singles wins at No. 1.
While Ceolin said he hadn't so much as peeked ahead at what is beyond Saturday's league opener at Portland State, the Cats have a quick turnaround. MSU plays at Portland on Sunday at 10:30 am.
