Cats take 1-1 record into matches against regional powers
(Jan. 23, 2026) – Montana State continues its season-opening stretch of road matches this weekend, playing a pair of Mountain Region powers in Colorado.
The Bobcats face Air Force at 10 am on Saturday at the U.S. Air Force Academy before traveling north to face Denver at 10:30 am on Sunday. Both matches offer challenges and opportunities, according to second-year Bobcats coach Mateus Ceolin.
"These are two of the top teams in our region," Ceolin said. "We compete against both teams in the fall so we know how talented and competitive they both are. Air Force and Denver are both well-respected nationally, so these matches will both be very challenging. And at the same time, they give us the opportunity to see where we we've improved since the fall. We look forward to both of these matches."
Montana State split a pair of 4-3 matches last weekend, winning against Marquette before falling to North Dakota. Both matches occurred in Grand Forks, North Dakota. All four wins came from the bottom four ladder spots. Freshmen David Ismanescu (No. 5 singles) and Ethan Masselis (No. 6) both finished the weekend 2-0. Yassin Ellaroussy, a sophomore, finished 1-0 and No. 3 and 1-0 at the fourth ladder spot. He earned Big Sky Men's Tennis Player of the Week honors for his efforts.
The Cats took the doubles point against Marquette and dropped it against UND. Ceolin said that the team's doubles lineup – Eddie Biss and Camille Chantron at the top, Ismanescu and Elaroussy at No. 2, and Andre Stewart and Oumar Diallo at No. 3 – is fairly set, he may tinker with the singles order.
"We played with these teams most of the fall in doubles," he said, "so this is a lineup we really like. We'll take a look at some different things as the spring progresses. We're looking for growth, so anything that helps us get better is something we'll consider."
AFA and the Pioneers each compete at the top of the Mountain Region. The Falcons finished as the region's 10th-ranked squad last spring, while Denver finished ranked third in the region and 59th nationally. Air Force and Denver both open their seasons this weekend, with the Pioneers hosting Texas Tech on Friday.
MSU and Air Force play on Saturday at 10 am. The Cats visit Denver on Sunday at 10:30 am.
