“Early on we did a lot of nice things,” said MSU third-year head coach Matt Houk.
Montana State senior middle blocker Camryn Greenwald recorded a career-high 17 kills as the Bobcats held on for a 25-23, 25-19, 23-25, 16-25, 16-14 victory over the University of Maryland Eastern Shore on Thursday night at the Gonzaga Invitational.
Montana State (2-2) opened the contest building a 13-7 lead following a Makenzie Jackson kill. Maryland Eastern Shore (2-3) closed to within one point on two occasions, the last coming a 24-23 before MSU's Joelie Spelts put the set away with a kill.
MSU pulled away at the midway mark of the second set closing out the frame on a 10-4 run. The stretch was sparked by Greenwald's four kills and two service aces via libero Lauren Lindseth.
The Bobcats looked poised to sweep the match leading 21-19 in the third set, before UMES used a 6-2 run to notch its first set victory. The Hawks held the momentum cruising to an early 13-4 cushion in the fourth set. MSU would get no closer than five points in the waning moments as UMES forced a fifth and deciding set.
Following back-to-back kills by Karli Heidemann, Montana State held a 14-9 advantage in the final set. UMES fought off six match points to even the contest at 14-all. The Bobcats closed out the night behind kills from Heidemann and Jackson.
"Early on we did a lot of nice things," said MSU third-year head coach Matt Houk. "We were really good from the service line and were able to knock them out of system. Sets one and two were good enough but sets 3-4 got away from us with too many errors.
"I thought Teagan (Jaynes) opened the fifth set with tough serving that put pressure on them," Houk said. "We also played better defense. And as uncomfortable as they made us in the final moments, we persevered and were able to pull it out."
Also, posting double figure kills for MSU were Heidemann and Spelts with 16 and ten kills, respectively. Greenwald finished with a team-best .444 attack mark while adding two aces and three blocks. Heidemann chipped in eight digs and three blocks, while Spelts tallied a team-high five blocks.
Jaynes dished out 49 assists and added nine digs and two aces. Lindseth ended with a match-high 22 digs.
Montana State plays Cal State Bakersfield on Friday at 3:30 p.m. (MT). The Roadrunners dropped a 3-1 decision to Gonzaga on Thursday afternoon.
